Month by month review

May

On the 21st May Rangers announced that Andrew Mitchell signed a new one contract.[1]

On the 22nd May Rangers announced the pre contract signing of former Kilmarnock goalkeeper Cammy Bell on a four year deal upon joining He said: “It’s been a long time coming for me. It’s great just to be here at a club of this size and a club I’ve always followed a youngster. It’s just a dream come true really. “I think I’ve got enough experience now. I’ve played for a few years in the SPL and I’ve got that behind me. “I needed to do that before I moved on and I had opportunities to move before now, it wasn't right though as I needed a bit longer. "I think now is the right time for me to step on and it’s a no brainer, it didn’t take me long to make the decision. “I got a phone call from my agent who told me Rangers were going to offer me a contract. He also said another team was going to offer me a contract down south and they wanted me to go down the next day. “I said ‘no, forget it’ as I wanted to go to Rangers and that was it, I had made my decision. “That was the club I wanted to go to and I know I’ve made the right decision. “They’ve got all the facilities you need, the fans, the whole package. “It’s a massive club and it’s one of the biggest clubs in Europe so there was no way I was going to turn down the chance to be a Rangers player.” Bell, of course, has already sampled the Ibrox atmosphere during his 10-year spell at Killie but knows playing in front of a full house wearing a Rangers jersey will be an altogether different experience. He added: “Totally. To run out in front of 50,000 fans will be an amazing feeling and hopefully I can prove to the fans that I can be a Rangers number 1. That’s my first job is to go out and prove to people that I’m good enough to be here.”[2]

Two days later Rangers announced the pre contract signing of former Motherwell player Nicky Law on a three year deal upon joining The 25-year-old said: “It has maybe taken a few people by surprise that I’m here but I’m looking forward to the season ahead now. “I learned of the interest in me quite a while back and in the last few weeks it has grown a bit more. I spoke to the manager before and we had a really good chat. “When I left the meeting I had with him, I felt then that I knew where I wanted to go and I pretty much made the choice then that if we could make it happen, I would like join Rangers. “Thankfully it has happened and I’m here now. The fact the team isn’t in the SPL any more doesn’t put me off and you’ll see that with the other new players hopefully coming in too. “This is Rangers Football Club and as soon as you hear of that interest, it is very difficult to say no. “I certainly wasn’t going to say no because this could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. If I said no now, I might never get the chance again. There was no way I could turn it down. “With crowds you saw here at Ibrox last season were unbelievable and this was the fifth-best supported club in the UK. “The fans are fantastic and I played here myself in the League Cup last season with Motherwell. It wasn’t even a full house then but it was the best atmosphere I’ve played in. “I’m delighted to have come to the club this morning and I’m very honoured to be signing for Rangers.”[3]

On The same day Rangers announced the pre contract signing of former Dundee United captain Jon Daly on a two year deal upon joining Speaking exclusively to RangersTV, Daly said: “I’ve a lot of time for Ally and his coaching staff and to go on to play for them is a big thing. “When we met for the first time, I could see the passion the manager has for the club and he really wants to drive it forward. “He spoke to me about the crowds and the club’s history and once we’d had a chat, my mind was basically made up. “I didn’t really want my agent to speak to any other clubs, I wanted to try to get this deal over the line and thankfully that has happened. "Having spoken to Ally, there's no doubt where I want to play my football and I'm really excited about what lies ahead. “I’ve taken a step back in terms of the level of football I’ll be playing but in terms of club size, Rangers are massive. “There’s a huge fanbase and when the chance came up to come here it was a no-brainer for me. It was a challenge I wanted to take on.” Daly scored 15 goals for United last season including one in the Scottish Cup against Rangers and two more against Celtic in the semi-finals of the competition. McCoist has brought him in primarily to play up front although he is adaptable and can operate as a centre-half too. Daly added: “I think the manager has brought me in first and foremost as a striker but I’m here to play football. “If that’s at the back as well that’s fine and that obviously adds an extra string to my bow if I can play in two positions. “It gives the manager options if he’s struggling at centre-back. I’m open to playing anywhere, I just want to play football for Rangers. If that’s at the back of up front I’m happy.”[4]

Four days later Rangers announced the pre contract signing of former Queen Of The South forward Nicky Clark on a three year deal upon joining he said: “I was here last year with Queen of the South but just putting the top on today, what a feeling it is. “As soon as I heard Rangers were interested in me I didn’t want to go anywhere else. “This club is amazing. The fanbase is here, even in the Third Division there was 48,000 plus at Ibrox. “So to get the chance to come in and play in front of that next season, I’m delighted.“I want to be part of the journey back to where this club belongs in the SPL and in Europe. “You see last week with the players the club has signed, there is great ability in the squad and I’m sure there will be a couple more to come in. “Nicky Law is a great player and Jon Daly has played a lot of games in the SPL. “That can only benefit me in terms of my career, coming in and playing with these boys. “I’m really looking forward to getting started.” Clark was named the PFA Division 2 Player of the Year in May and is confident he can continue his terrific goalscoring form from last term with Rangers. He added: “Last season was the best I have had in my career so far. “It was amazing to win the league as early as we did and to win the Ramsdens Cup as well. I was also pleased to score the goals I did and to get the personal awards was great. “But now I’m a Rangers player and I will work as hard as I can for the team and give everything, 110 per cent every week. “I did that last season so that will not change and hopefully I can score as many goals as I can. “I will give it my best shot and hopefully we can win the league again.[5]

June

On the 3rd June Rangers confirmed that Honduran midfielder Arnold Peralta agreed to join the club on a four–year deal upon joining He said: “I am delighted to be joining a club with the size and history of Rangers. I had several offers from Europe, MLS and at home in Honduras but when I was told I could sign for Rangers it was an easy decision. “I am really looking forward to pulling on that famous blue shirt and getting out on the Ibrox pitch, hopefully the club and fans will appreciate what I can bring to the team.”[6]

On 18 June Rangers announced that former player Steven Smith had rejoined the club on a two year deal upon rejoining the club He told RangersTV: “The priority for me was my family. My time in America was really enjoyable but it was time I spent away from them. “My son is at the stage where he’s about to go to school and I want him to go to school in Scotland. England wasn’t an option and I didn’t even want to speak to clubs there. “I got the opportunity to come in and train and I knew it might be difficult for me to get something because I had limited my options. “The manager was good enough to give me facilities, I used them and I obviously did something right. “It’s great to be back. It was obviously known I was training here from the tail end of last year and it’s something which has been at the back of my mind. “I had a brief conversation with the manager before everyone finished up for the summer and I’m delighted to be here now. “When I came here at first, it wasn’t in my thoughts to try to get a deal because I was still contracted in America. “There was still an option to go back there and play both on their part and mine and that was the priority at that stage. “But once I found out they weren’t taking up the option for me to back and I had given up my chance to return, things changed. “I never really treated my time training here as a trial. I liked working hard so I just got my head down and it obviously worked because I’m sitting here today.”[7]

On 24 June Rangers announced Forward Kane Hemmings left the club.[8]

On 25 June Rangers announced that former loanie Richard Foster joined the club on a two year contract upon joining Foster told RangersTV: “The fans here expect a certain level of performance and expect to win every game. Hopefully I can bring something to the team in that respect.“When I first came down here from Aberdeen the last time, I did get my eyes opened a bit and I realised just how big the club was.“Now, already knowing what the fans are like and everything else too, I understand what to expect.“The league is the most is the most important thing for us this season but the cups are massive for us too.“We want to see how well-equipped we are against the bigger teams and last year was a bit disappointing in that respect so we’ll be looking to do better this year.”Foster first learned of Rangers’ interest a week ago and arrived in Glasgow yesterday to finalise his deal.A follower of the club himself, he has looked on from afar and retained an interest in developments at Ibrox since he moved to England at the start of 2012.Things at Gers have clearly changed from when he played in Glasgow previously but he still couldn’t resist the chance to return to Govan.Foster added: “I loved my time when I was here and things are obviously a lot different to the way they were then but I was happy to get the chance to come back all the same.“When you walk into a facility such as Murray Park, you realise you are at a proper football club and the stadium is incredible too.“I was hearing that last season Rangers were getting 50,000 people at home and you don’t get to play in front of crowds like the one at Ibrox anywhere else.“There were a lot of factors in me coming back and Rangers are a massive club. They’re one of the biggest if not the biggest in Scotland.“Regardless of the league they are in, they are still huge and over the next two years my aim is to help them try to get back up.“I obviously have to prove myself and to be fair to the Rangers fans, they’ve always been prepared to wipe the slate clean and give people a chance.“I felt in the games I played here before that I did quite well and I want to show I can still do a job for the team now.“The chance to come back only arose in the last few days and when I spoke to my agent about it, I was really interested.“I’m now at a great club again with great facilities and a great stadium. It’s one I love being at and I supported Rangers when I was younger so it ticks every box for me.”[9]

On 26 June Rangers announced that defender Darren Cole had signed a new one year contract.[10]

On 29 June Rangers announced that defenders Carlos Bocanegra and Dorin Goian after their contracts were mutually ended.[11]

That same day Rangers announce that former boss Davie White died at the age of the 80 he was the fourth man to manage Rangers.[14]

On 26 July Rangers announce that Bilel Mohsni had agreed a pre contract with the club upon joining He told RangersTV: “I’m very happy to sign for Rangers. I have agreed for two years and I think it is a chance to prove that I can play in the top league and be a part of the squad.“It would be amazing to be one of the players who help Rangers back to where Rangers belongs.”Mohsni settled quickly and impressed Ally McCoist on pre-season tours to Brora and Germany and the defender admits his new team mates have played a huge part in that.He added: “It’s a great squad with a great atmosphere so I’ve enjoyed it a lot because all of the players welcomed me very quickly.“I felt like part of the squad from the first day so I’ve very happy to sign and stay with that team.“Sometimes when you feel happy like that you play better and I felt that way from the first day so maybe that helped me decide to stay.“I was at Southend before and the facilities were ok but when you compare it to Rangers you see that here there is everything.“The training ground, the stadium, these are some of the reasons you want to come to a club like this.”[15]

On 29 July Rangers won their first game of the 2013/14 season with a win away to Albion Rovers at Almondvale Stadium 0-4 the scores were Ian Black, Nicky Law and David Templeton.[16]

On 17 August Rangers made it two League wins out of two in SPFL League One after an excellent 3-0 victory over a hard working Stranraer side at Stair Park.[19]

On 20 August Republic of Ireland youth international Sam Kelly joins Rangers on weeks trial.[20]

On the same day Rangers announce that defender Darren Cole was asked to temporary stay away from the club following a breach of discipline.[21]
