Sarkar is both a surname and a title among the Bengali people, predominantly in India (mostly in the States of West Bengal and Tripura) and Bangladesh. This surname is spelt in different ways such as Sarkar, Sarker, Sorkar, Sarcar, Sircar or Sorcar. The word was originally used for Rajputs and Kayastha people of Bengal Province and derives from Persian "Sarkaar" meaning 'noble lord'. The Rajputs(mainly Bharadwaj,Kolanch,Ouramber,Gourahar,Gour clan) of Bengali origin use the word and also denoted as "Thakursarkar","Sarkarmosai","Sarkarbabu","Sarkar" etc.The Kayastha people(except the kulinas) use the word as surname and later the kulina kayasthas along with other castes add this term as an honourific surname or title. i.e. Basu Sarkar,Deb Sarkar,Dey Sarkar,Dutta Sarkar,Ghosh Sarkar,Mallick Sarkar,Mitra Sarkar,Roy Sarkar,Sinha Sarkar etc.
