Elixir is a women's fragrance by Colombian singer songwriter Shakira. Developed following her agreement with international fashion company Puig to create a line of beauty and personal care products and the release of her first fragrance S by Shakira and its successor S by Shakira Eau Florale, Elixir aims to capture Shakira's "most sensual and exotic side" and is classified as an oriental perfume. The flacon of the perfume is inspired by apothecary bottles and is made to resemble a magical potion. A commercial for the fragrance was directed by Jaume de Laiguana in the Sahara desert in Morocco.

Shakira launched the fragrance at a press release in São Paulo, Brazil, in July 2012. Elixir was well received both critically and commercially. In August 2013, Wild Elixir was released as a flanker fragrance and is meant to display a more adventurous side of Shakira. The floral oriental perfume was promoted through a commercial which features Shakira encountering two cheetahs in an arid landscape.

Development

Background

After my first two fragrances, I wanted to do something different - I wanted to push the idea even further and develop a fragrance that would express my most sensual and exotic side, and Elixir is the result of that. We worked on the concept of a "second skin," a fragrance that becomes a part of you.

- Shakira, on her inspiration behind the perfume.[1]

In 2008, international fashion and fragrance company Puig announced that it had formed a partnership with Shakira and had signed an agreement "to develop a line of signature products produced with and inspired by the artist".[2] The agreement included the production and creation of several beauty and personal care products and it was stated that "Shakira will develop, with a dedicated team, the creation of the product line from inception to completion".[2] The distribution of the products and the creation of "strategic alliances" were chosen to be solely the responsibility of the company.[2] Shakira expressed her views about the partnership, saying "I am very excited to be able to express myself through another creative medium. “My feeling is that personal care and beauty should be effortless and accessible for everyone."[2] Interested in perfumery and conveying "emotions through aromas", the singer decided to take the idea further and began exploring various scents.[3] The first product of their collaboration was S by Shakira, a woman's fragrance which was released in September, 2010.[4]

After developing S by Shakira and its successor S by Shakira Eau Florale, Shakira decided to create a scent which would display her "most sensual and exotic side" and sought inspiration from the deserts of Morocco.[1][5] Two perfumers from Swiss fragrance manufacturer Givaudan, Alexandra Kosinski and Sonia Constant, collaborated with Elisabeth Vidal, a perfumer from Puig who also worked with Shakira on S by Shakira Eau Florale,[6] to create the scent.[1]

Scent and packaging

The flacon of the perfume is similar to an apothecary bottle

Elixir is classified as a oriental perfume and according to the official website of the fragrance, it is inspired by Shakira's "most sensual and exotic movements".[7] The top notes of the perfume were described by Shakira as "floral and spicy" and include neroli, white pepper, and white flower; the heart notes were said to be "velvety and fruity" and comprise of flowers like freesia and paeonia, and apricot; the base notes contain amber, benzoin, musk, sugar cane and white cedar wood.[8][9] In an interview with Teen Vogue, Shakira said that the scent achieves a "perfect balance" and contains a specific amount of "sweetness", which she termed as the "common denominator" in her fragrances.[8] She opined that Elixir could be used as a perfume during the day as well as the night, calling it "very feminine, elegant, and young".[8] The fragrance is meant to be used by women, and Shakira claimed that "The woman who wears this wants passion in her life but also wants to carry herself in an elegant way".[10] She also said that the scent spreads in a subtle manner and "lasts for hours and people can feel it, but they have to make an effort to get close to you to feel it even more".[10]

The flacon of Elixir is made of clear glass and has a slender gold-tinted neck.[1] According to Jose Manuel Albesa, chief brand officer of Puig, it is inspired by the bottles used in the historic medical practice of apothecary.[1] In an interview with Latina, Shakira revealed that she wanted to "depict the kind of bottle that was used in ancient times, but that looked modern and chic as well" and come up with a design similar to a magical potion, which is the definition of the word "elixir".[10] As the scent is inspired by the desert, she chose the tint of the bottle to be golden so that it can "evoke the memories of sands and sunsets".[10] The packaging of the fragrance was designed by Colombian artist Catalina Estrada and features colourful illustrations of various birds and leaves printed on a pale background.[1]

Release

Released in late-July, 2012, Elixir was made available for purchase exclusively in American department store chains Kohl's and Sears.[1] The two stores served as exclusive retailers of the fragrance for two months, after which it was released to mass market stores like CVS Caremark and Walgreens.[1] Elixir was released in approximately 19,000 stores in the United States alone.[1] Elsewhere, Elixir was released to major markets in Eastern Europe, Italy, and Latin America.[1] The perfume was aimed at a younger demographic, as revealed by Albesa, who said that Elixir "is aimed at a youthful consumer who wants to explore her power and her mystery".[1]

The promotional shoots of Elixir took place in the Sahara desert in Morocco

Shakira launched Elixir at a press release in São Paulo, Brazil, on 17 July 2012, where she discussed about her inspiration behind the fragrance and its development process.[11] The commercial for the fragrance was shot in the Sahara desert in Morocco by Jaume de Laiguana, who had previously directed music videos for various songs by Shakira, like "Loca" and "Rabiosa".[1] The advertisement features Shakira in the middle of the desert wearing a long skirt; she opens a bottle of Elixir and performs a dance routine, attracting an eagle towards her which perches on her arm.

Elixir was produced in the following range:[1]

Reception

Samantha Lea from Latina praised the perfume's versatility, saying it is suitable for use "whether you prefer fruity to floral scents or want your scent to transport you to a tropical beach".[14] She chose the usage of freesia and peony as the highlight of Elixir and included the perfume in her list of "Five Amazing Summer Scents and Perfumes".[14] At the 2011 Academia Del Perfume Award ceremony sponsored by the The Fragrance Foundation, Elixir won the award for "Best Female Perfume General Public Category". As Shakira was unable to attend the ceremony, she thanked the jury through a video call.[15] Shakira later said that she was "delighted and honoured" to be the winner of the award and that she was "so proud of what we have achieved with the fragrance of Elixir."[16]

Industry analysts predicted that the perfume would make $14 million through global retail sales in its first year.[1] 20 percent of this amount was credited to sales in the United States.[1] In April 2013, Puig released a press statement mentioning that the company had increased its market share in fragrances to 8.1 percent in 2012 and thus had attained the sixth place worldwide in the selective perfume industry.[17] The press release also stated that Elixir had performed well commercially, which the company said helped to "maintain its prominent position in the masstige fragrance category in Spain and abroad".[17]

Background and scent

Wild Elixir was released as a flanker fragrance to Elixir on 25 August 2013.[18] The perfume aims to capture a more adventurous and exotic side of Shakira, and according to its official website, it is a "story of a woman who moves as one with nature, a woman whose captivating beauty conquers and hypnotizes everything around her".[19] Categorised as a floral oriental perfume, Wild Elixir features top notes of cassis and mandarin; heart notes of honeysuckle flower, orange blossom, and peach fruit accord; the base notes comprise of benzoin resin, patchouli, and sandalwood.[20] The flacon of the perfume is largely similar to the original one, but instead features a golden and black colour scheme in order to "create a contrast of power and femininity, exotic luxury and sensual attractiveness".[21] The packaging was again designed by Estrada and features illustrations of flowers and wild cats set on a brownish orange background; it is made to resemble the look and "sensations" of the African savannah.[22]

Promotion

Shakira appears alongside two cheetahs in the commercial for Wild Elixir.

On 23 June 2013, Shakira tweeted a picture of her posing alongside two cheetahs in a barren landscape and text reading "If you saw the photo of Shak[ira] with a pair of cheetahs this week, you'll know that something wild is coming....".[23] She also released a teaser of the commercial for the fragrance.[23] A full version of the commercial was released later, and begins with Shakira, dressed in dark burgundy dress, walking in an arid deserted region where she encounters two cheetahs. The two animals prepare to attack her and begin running towards her. However, when they come near to Shakira, they abruptly stop and are later seen prowling around her while she is standing atop a rock. A bottle of Wild Elixir is then shown placed on a log of wood.[24] Tim Nixon from The Sun wrote of the commercial, saying "The pop beauty, 36, is on ravishing form in a plunging burgundy dress, parading a slender leg in the sheer material. She's flanked by two menacing big cats in an arid location, though it's unlikely they were present when she posed for the shot".[25] For additional promotion, a game was also made available for users to play at the official website of the fragrance.[26] Every person who played the game would also donate a brick to Shakira's Barefoot Foundation automatically.[26]
