Malik Ata Muhammad Khan (Urdu, Punjabi: ملک عطا محمد خان, born 25 October 1941) is a prominent feudal lord of Kot Fateh Khan in Attock District of North Western Punjab, Pakistan. He is the current Chief of Kot Fateh Khan.

Family background

Malik Ata Muhammad Khan was born to a prominent politically active family of the Rajput Jodhra tribe having strong relations with Ghebas of Fateh Jang and Awan tribe of Mianwali District of Pakistan.. His father Malik Yar Muhammad Khan was also a very well known personality of Pindigheb . His maternal grandfather Sardar Sir Muhammad Nawaz Khan, was a member of Punjab Legislative Assembly from 1947 to 1950. He was the first ambassador of Pakistan to France. He purchased the building from his own pocket and gifted it to Pakistan and the embassy is still is in that building. Another uncle Malik Amir Muhammad Khan Awan of Kalabagh, was Governor of West Pakistan from 1960 to 1966. His cousin Ch. Sher Ali Khan is still a member of Punjab Assembly.[1] Malik Ata Muhammad Khan married into the Kalabagh family.

Educational qualifications

Malik Ata Muhammad Khan got his early education from the Aitchison College Lahore, and did his FSC from the Forman Christian College, Lahore. and thereafter proceeded to England for LLB. He is an Oxford University law graduate.[1]

Political career

In the year 1988 he contested election on the Islami Jamauri Ittihad (IJI) platform. Thereafter in 1990, Malik Ata Muhammad Khan again contested the election from his home constituency (PP-15 — Attock) and was elected and served the provincial assembly of the Punjab from November 5, 1990 to June 28, 1993.[2] After his father’s death in 1996, he assumed the responsibilities of the family and management of the estate. He was not in a position to focus on the matters relating to the management of the estate, family issues and other matters and continue his participation in politics. His friends, who included Chaudhry Aitezaz Ahsan, Mir Zafar ullah Khan Jamali, Mir Taj Muhammad Jamali and Hamid Nasir Chatha who were also his class fellows, impressed upon him not to give up politics, but Malik Ata Muhammad Khan said that he held it more important to serve his people for their well-being as compared to politics.[1]

Hobbies

Malik Ata is very fond of horse-riding, body building and wrestling since his childhood.He himself took part in these sports on many occasion. During his studies he was member of tent pegging team in Aitchison College.

Contribution in tent pegging

Malik Ata Muhammad Khan has an internationally renowned stable in Kot Fateh Khan.

  • He has won world championship titles in tent pegging. In tent pegging, he has developed and mastered a unique style of riding that has been his hallmark in all the

local and international festivals. Malik Ata has been participating in the international tent pegging championships since early 60s and officially he is leading the Pakistan tent pegging team since 1982. Pakistan team, under his patronage takes part in international tent pegging events regularly.

  • In 1982, he participated in the Ninth Asian Games held in Delhi, as captain of the Pakistan spear-throwing team and succeeded in winning his session, attaining the world championship title.
  • Malik Ata with Pakistan team took part in 1982 Hyde Park games in London. The Times London had published the photo on its front page in which Malik Ata and Mian Asgher Hayat from Kolian Shah Hussain, Pakistan were riding.[3] He has taken part in several other tournaments in Europe and South Africa
  • He was honored as the best horse rider in the National Horse and Cattle Show held in Lahore for several years.
  • 3-Nation International Tent pegging Competition was held from February 8–12 at University of Agriculture, Faisalabad.It was first of its kind that more that 2 international teams came Pakistan to participate in an International event. England, Pakistan, South Africa and UN team were the participants. The event was supervised by three international judges from India, South Africa and Pakistan. The teams were invited by Malik Ata who was the chief organiser.[4][5][6][7]
  • He is known as patron_in_chief of tent pegging and horse riding in Pakistan.[1]

Tent pegging and bull race events are held at his home town Kot Fateh Khan regularly.

Responsibilities in World Tent Pegging Federation

World Equestrian Tent pegging Championship 2013 held at Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Gurgaon, New Delhi India from 20–24 March 2013. This was for the first time that 17 countries participated in the championship. Malik Ata, in his preliminary address expressed the desire for a world organization to address the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI). The participants created the World Tent pegging Federation. In the recognition of his services for the promotion of tent pegging, all the members unanimously made Malik Ata the honorary president of the federation.[8][9]

Second World Tent Pegging Federation Meeting held in Oman on October 27, 2013. Members of the Executive Committee were elected there. Malik Ata is one of them. The committee will serve for the next 4 years.[10]

Media appearances

He was mentioned in Michael Palin's Himalaya production.[11] He was also the subject of a short documentary produced by the BBC entitled "One Man and his Horse" in 1983.[12][13]

Malik Ata Muhammad Khan appeared in PTV's 1998 drama Alpha Bravo Charlie produced by ISPR and directed by Pakistani drama and film director Shoaib Mansoor.[14]

Public Image

Malik Ata's lifestyle and unique dress has made him famous. He travels around the world in Pakistani national dress including a turban made up of 7 yards cloth.[15] He calls himself "The last of the dinosaurs"[16] and looks like one too. He holds the title of Prince and known as Prince Malik around the world.[17]

In Pakistan, contribution in tent pegging and specially his participation in PTV's 1998 drama Alpha Bravo Charlie has increased his fame.

While he does not shy away from public dealings, Malik Ata is a private person and selective about his friends. In the company of his inner circle, he is a jolly and open person and being well-read and poetically inclined,frequently quotes appropriate verses from various poets and writers in English, Urdu or Punjabi to make his point.Being a renowned horse lover, most of his close friends share the same passion.[1]
