Team Anna
Team Anna was a non-political Indian group that lobbied for the passage of the Jan Lokpal Bill against corruption in 2011.[1] The word Anna means "elder person" or "father" in Marathi, and the group is named after the popular name of its founder, Anna Hazare.
Original group
Anna Hazare, a veteran Gandhian social worker from Maharashtra, led the 2011 Indian anti-corruption movement in India. Among its notable members were:
- Arvind Kejriwal- RTI activist and ex-IRS Commissioner (Said to be the Chief Architect of the Movement).
- Shanti Bhushan- Supreme Court lawyer and former Law Minister of Govt of India
- Prashant Bhushan - advocate of Supreme Court of India and son of Shanti Bhushan
- Kiran Bedi - Former police officer, the first woman IPS Officer of India and a social worker
- Medha Patkar - Social activist
- Manish Sisodia - Former Zee News Producer and Currently a politician, who runs the Kabir NGO
- Santosh Hegde - Former Supreme Court judge
- Kumar Vishwas - Hindi Poet and a professor of Hindi Literature
- Sanjay Singh - Social activist
- Chandra Mohan - Social activist & Actor / Director
- Shazia Ilmi - Social activist and journalist
- Gopal Rai - Social activist
In August 2012, it was reported that Team Anna had been disbanded due to internal disagreement, particularly over whether the movement should enter the political arena and form a political party.[2] Team Anna is likely to test its political clout in next year's Delhi Assembly polls before taking the plunge in 2014 general elections.[3]
Team Anna 2.0
After the dissolution of the original group, some members of the team moved to reform the party, although other members were opposed to that move. Arvind Kejriwal and fellow members announced an intention to reform the party, and a new team was formed with new members.[4][5]
