Geethanjali (Malayalam: ഗീതാഞ്ജലി) is a 2013 Malayalam psychological horror thriller film written by Abhilash Nair and directed by Priyadarshan.[1] The film stars Mohanlal, Nishan, Keerthi Suresh, Swapna Menon, Siddique, Madhu, Innocent and KB Ganesh Kumar in lead roles.

Mohanlal plays Dr. Sunny Joseph, the brilliant yet frolicsome psychiatrist from the 1993 AM Fazil-Madhu Muttam film Manichitrathazhu. Keerthi Suresh, daughter of actress Menaka, makes her debut in the film. The film moves around the life of a young couple - Anoop and Anjali (Nishan and Keerthi Suresh) - who encounter strange events in their mansion and Dr. Sunny Joseph is summoned to help them.

The film released on November 14, 2013 and collected 1.05 Crores in opening day. But considering its budget, the film went to a box office bomb.

Plot

Anjali (Keerthi Suresh), who has a recent shocking history of her twin sister Geetha (Keerthi Suresh) committing suicide. She is already betrothed to Anoop (Nishan) from a prominent family. But when her mother suddenly falls down from the staircase ending up in paralysis, Anjali and Anoop proceed to her Arackal house. Once they reach there, they are into more mysteries as the spirit of Geetha starts to haunt Anjali, which even physically disturbs her. Within days from a series of horrifying incidents arrives Dr. Sunny Joseph (Mohanlal) with his style of wit and wisdom, to treat Anjali and to help her out of the crisis that she is presently in.

Mohanlal portrayed the psychiatrist Dr. Sunny Joseph (the character he acted in 1993 film Manichitrathazhu) even though this film is not an official sequel to Manichitrathazhu.[2] Priyadarshan had earlier worked as one of the second-unit directors, along with Siddique, Lal and Sibi Malayil in Manichitrathazhu, directed by his close friend AM Fazil. Actress Menaka's daughter Keerthy Suresh playing female lead role in the film.[3]

The music department was handled by Vidyasagar with lyrics of the songs written by ONV Kurup. Lalgudi N Ilayaraja, who won the National Film Award for Best Production Design in 2012 for the Tamil film Vishwaroopam, handled the art department.[4]

The film began its shoot and held its initiation ceremony on July 6, 2013. The film was shot on locations in Thiruvananthapuram and Chithranjali Studio.

The film released in 350 theaters worldwide. The film was sold out for 7 crores to Asianet as satellite rights.

Geethaanjali was awarded with U/A certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification.

It is the first time in Malayalam film industry that a film will release worldwide same day. Geethaanjali will be releasing in India, Middle East, USA, Europe, Finland, Sweden and also Japan. It is the first time that a Malayalam movie will be releasing in Japan. Europe Distribution rights for Geethaanjali has been purchased by Leading Europe Malayalam film distribution company P J Entertainments for an undisclosed fee.[5]

Reception

The movie received mixed to positive reviews. Paresh C Palicha of Rediff gave the film 3.5 out of five stars praising Mohanlal for his performance as Dr Sunny Joseph. Even though it is a horror comedy based movie Director Priyadarshan has worked his magic on this.

Box Office

The movie has grossed an amount of 1.05 crores on the first day[6] and has collected a gross of 2.27 Crs within 3 days of its release from Kerala alone.[7] By the 4th day it collected a total of 4.28 crores from all India including 3.08 crores from Kerala.[8]
