24

24 is an Indian television drama series based on the American series of the same name. The Hindi language show is written by Rensil D'Silva, Bhavani Iyer & Priya Pinto, directed by Abhinay Deo and produced by Anil Kapoor Films.[2][3][4] The show premiered on the Viacom co-owned Colors channel on 4 October 2013.

The Hindi version of 24 is the first adaptation of the show, the India rights for which were acquired from Fox and 24 producer Howard Gordon by Anil Kapoor Films.[3]

Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor plays the lead role (similar to Jack Bauer) in the show. Kapoor was previously featured in the 24 series playing President Omar Hassan.[5] The show is set in Mumbai (Bombay) and it is known that the main set of the Anti-Terrorist Unit (ATU) is a replica of the one in the original series.[4] Bollywood actors Anupam Kher and Shabana Azmi both have cameo performances in the show.[6][7][8]

The first season is directed by Abhinay Deo, written by Rensil D'Silva and Bhavani Iyer and is supervised by Manisha Sharma.[3]

Kiefer Sutherland, who starred in the original show[9] has shown interest in acting in the Hindi version.[10]

Synopsis

The Indian adaptation of '24', retains all the elements of the international series, the real-time, pulse-pounding, fast-paced format with split screens and complex interweaving storylines, with 24 episodes capturing 24 hours. The premiere episode will follow the exploits of heroic Jai Singh Rathod and his team.

Production

Anil Kapoor bought the official rights of 24 in November,2011. It took him a year of negotiations with the American producers and creators of 24 to crack the deal. The international team of 24 will be involved with the making. The show will air in Hindi and will also be dubbed in various regional languages. When quizzed about stepping into Jack Bauer's shoes, he says, "It's a huge honour, but I am anxious as Jack is an iconic character like Jack Sparrow or Batman. He is loved all over the world. It's a great responsibility for me as an entrepreneur and as actor. I will try my best and hope I can do even 50 per cent of what they have done. If I achieve a little of what Keifer has, I will be happy." India is the first country outside of the US to get rights to adapt the espionage thriller. "We hope this will pave the way for many more local versions of this brilliant series in other international territories," Fox International Television president Marion Edwards said in an email reply to ET.[11]

TV rights

Colors channel has bought the broadcast rights for an Indian version of the American action thriller television series '24' from actor Anil Kapoor in a deal estimated at Rs 150 crore. Kapoor holds the rights of the 192 episodes for a period of four years extendable to another ten.[12]

Video game

On October 21, 2013, Kapoor launched Tata Safari Storm presents 24 — The Game, a 3D game in which players participate as ATU Chief Jai Singh Rathod, portrayed on-screen by Kapoor.[13]

Cast

Shooting and airing

Filming started in February 2013 in Mumbai, mainly in actual city locations. The first episode aired on 4 October 2013.

Media Response

The show was described by the media as "one of India's most ambitious TV shows". It is considered to be one of the most expensive TV shows ever produced in India and the first to have a Bollywood super-star in the lead. [21] The initial episodes were instant hit and the viewership remained decent.[22] The success prompted Anil Kapoor to start its second season.[23]
