"G.U.Y."
Song

"G.U.Y.", an acronym for "Girl Under You", is a song by American recording artist Lady Gaga, taken from her third studio album, Artpop (2013). The song was written and produced by Gaga and Zedd. It is scheduled to officially impact Top 40/Mainstream radio in the U.S. on April 8, 2014 as the third single from Artpop.[1]

Being called "the first true ARTPOP standout"[2] and "almost clever",[3] "G.U.Y" was met with critical acclaim, with critics praising Zedd's production and its lyrical content.

Composition

Jason Lipshutz of Billboard described "G.U.Y." as a "shuddering dance siren that makes the distinction between gender equality and willful sexual submission".[2] The song opens with a spoken-word reference to the Greek God, Himeros, a son of Aphrodite, contributing to the references Artpop makes to mythology.[4]

Reception

Upon release, "G.U.Y." received acclaim from music critics. Lipshutz wrote "Zedd's hornet's nest of production swarms Gaga's provocative commands, and the sucker-punch of the hook hammers the message home to create the first true 'ARTPOP' standout".[2] Robert Copsey from Digital Spy praised the song's "grinding bass and darting synths" and "hypnotic chorus".[5] Andy Gill of The Independent felt the song made sexual attraction "seem grimly denatured".[6] MTV News' John Walker praised the track's lyrical content but was less pleased with the background music.[7] Caryn Ganz from Rolling Stone called the song a "gothy grinder".[8] Spin found the song to be "an ode to taking on the submissive role in a relationship".[9] Stacy-Ann Ellis from Vibe deemed the song "almost clever".[3]

Release and music video

The song was confirmed to be the third single in February 2014, when production of its music video was underway.[10] While filming the video at Hearst Castle, the former home of William Randolph Hearst located near San Simeon, California, Gaga was bitten by a slow loris.[10][11] Gaga previewed the music video on March 21, during an interview with Savannah Guthrie for Today. The video debuted on Dateline NBC on March 22, 2014.[12]

Charts

Following the release of Artpop, the song debuted and reached a peak of number 42 in the Gaon Chart of South Korea, selling 3,362 copies.
