The fourth season of the NBC American supernatural drama series Grimm was announced on March 19, 2014.[1] It is set to consist of 22 episodes.[1] The series, created by David Greenwalt, Jim Kouf and Stephen Carpenter, follows a descendant of the Grimm line, Nick Burkhardt, as he deals with being a cop, and trying not to expose his secret as a Grimm.
Cast
Main cast
- David Giuntoli as Nick Burkhardt:
- One of the last known descendants of the Grimm line and a Portland homicide detective. After learning of his destiny, he accepted it, and it lead him to lead a dangerous double-life between the supernatural and his personal life. In the third season finale, Nick lost his Grimm powers as a result of a potion and sexual encounter with Adalind. Grimm co-creator, Jim Kouf revealed in a post-finale interview: "It's always been one of the things we wanted to explore. We just didn't know when we wanted to explore it. But now we've written ourselves into a giant corner and I guess we have to explore it."[2]
- Russell Hornsby as Hank Griffin:
- Nick's best friend and detective homicide partner.
- Bitsie Tulloch as Juliette Silverton:
- Nick's girlfriend and a veterinarian. In the season 3 finale, Juliette discovered that Nick lost his powers because of a potion mixed with a sexual encounter between Nick and Adalind, which tested their relationship. Grimm co-creator, David Greenwalt said after the season 3 finale regarding Juliette arguing against Nick getting his Grimm powers back: "That’s going to be her first point of view, and it’s going to eventually become his point of view. But then you realize: He’s only half a man if he’s not a Grimm. The way to get him back is very complex and kind of fun, too. They will come to agreement, eventually, but it’ll be over a long period."[3]
- Silas Weir Mitchell as Monroe:
- A reformed Blutbad and Nick's first Wesen ally. In the season 3 finale, Monroe married his fiancée, Rosalee before finding out what happened to Nick. About his potential life as a married man, Greenwalt commented: "Eventually, there are a lot of Wesen who don’t like interracial Wesen marriage, if you will. They’re going to run into a lot of trouble with some very radical Wesen like that, and that’s going to be a big thing that happens to them in the first half of the season."[3]
- Reggie Lee as Sergeant Drew Wu:
- Simply know as "Wu," another one of Nick's police partners. In the season 3 finale, he discovered one of the Grimm books on Trubel's bed, where he saw on of the various Wesen entries. Seeing the entry revived his fear from his Aswang encounter earlier in the season. Greenwalt revealed that the new season would present a conclusion of the act of introducing Wu to the supernatural world: "They’re gonna have to decide if they want to bring him into this or not, because now he’s been through enough… Definitely, all of this [Is it real or not?] will be coming up for him, big time."[3]
- Sasha Roiz as Captain Sean Renard:
- The captain of the police department in Portland and a royal Zauberbiest bastard, acting as an ally and enemy of Nick. In the season 3 finale, he was shot in the chest several times by Weston Steward, causing him to be taken to the hospital in a dying state. Both Kouf and Greenwalt revealed that they would like to explore if the character lives or dies at the start of the fourth season.[3]
- Bree Turner as Rosalee Calvert:
- Monroe's Fuchsbau wife and another one of Nick's Wesen allies.
- Claire Coffee as Adalind Schade:
- One of Nick's worst enemies, a dangerous and revengeful Hexenbiest, willing to use spells and potions to get what she wants. She's willing to do whatever she has to, to get her daughter, Diana back.
Recurring cast
- Jacqueline Toboni as Theresa “Trubel” Rubel
- A rebel and impulsive, yet good intentioned young woman, who like Nick is a Grimm. In July, David Greenwalt revealed that he and Jim Kouf don't know exactly how long Trubel will remain on "Grimm," but that she at least will be in the first several episodes. "That's a thing that's going to have to organically reveal itself," Greenwalt says.[4]
- Elizabeth Rodriguez as Special Agent Chavez
- An FBI agent that is assigned to investigate the murder of Weston Steward.[5]
Production
NBC CEO Robert Greenblatt confirmed in early 2014 that the chances of renewing the series for a fourth season were very high thanks to the success programming show on Friday nights in the United States: "I think that the genre audience proves to be a very loyal one. We like what we're building on Friday night with 'Grimm'."[6]
On March 19, 2014, NBC announced that the series had been renewed for a third season with a 22-episode order.[7][8] In mid May, NBC announced its official TV show's premiered dates, among which is included the fourth season of Grimm that will be air on October 24, 2014.[9]
Casting
In mid-July Elizabeth Rodriguez was cast as Special Agent Chavez, one of four FBI agents assigned to investigate the recent homicide of Weston Steward.[5]
Filming
Like the previous three seasons, the majority of filming takes place in the Portland, Oregon area. Filming for the season began on July 16, 2014.[10]
