Chaos is the main enemy in the video game Sonic Adventure for the Sega Dreamcast. He is generally assumed to be male, since Tikal refers to him as one. Chaos is an immortal, ageless god-like creature that seems to be composed entirely of water, but is also said to be concentrated chaos energy (in Sonic X, Eggman implies that he is composed of "Chaos energy in a liquid state"). He was trapped inside the Master Emerald for 10,000 years before being released by Dr. Eggman in a bid to conquer the world. He was the original guardian of the Chaos Emeralds, Chao, and the Master Emerald.

History

Chaos was once good. He protected the Chao and guarded the Chaos Emeralds and the Master Emerald. However the leader of the echidna tribe, Pachacamac, tried to steal the Emeralds so he could use them against his enemies. They stormed the shrine where the Emeralds were, harming many Chao in the process. Chaos, in a fit of rage, vanquished them by absorbing the power of the Chaos Emeralds. Pachacamac's daughter, Tikal, not wanting to see the world destroyed, sealed herself and Chaos within the Master Emerald.

Present Day

Chaos laid in wait for many centuries until Dr. Eggman, having read ancient tablets describing the fall of the Echidnas and Chaos, released him by shattering the Master Emerald. Chaos swears to follow Eggman as he knows that the Eggman can get the Chaos Emeralds back for him.

Eventually, Eggman's plans, as always, fall through at the hands of Sonic and his friends. So Chaos abandons him and collects the Emeralds himself. Once they are in his possession he absorbs the negative powers of the Emeralds and discards them. This proves to be the means to his downfall as Sonic absorbs the positive energies of the Emeralds and transforms into Super Sonic and eventually defeats him, in the process ridding Chaos of his evil mindset and turning him back to Chaos Zero. He is known to appear during upcoming disasters as shown in Sonic Battle.

Chaos' Forms

Chaos' form and skills change and increase with every Chaos Emerald that he absorbs. Over time he develops from a humanoid water creature to a horrible, world-destroying monster.

Chaos 0

This is the base form of Chaos before he has absorbed any Chaos Emeralds. He is humanoid, about five feet tall with bright green eyes. His brain is visible in this form through his watery exterior. He can extend his arms as an attack. This is Sonic's first boss he fights Chaos 0 outside the City Hall in Station Square. Many of his attacks include extending his arms, turning into a puddle of water and moving around (this only happens when hit), and jumping onto a lightpost and extending his arms.

He appears in this form in Sonic Battle, where he is the slowest character in the game but his extendable limbs give him a much bigger attack range then he appears to have.

Chaos 1

After Chaos absorbs one Chaos Emerald, he is virtually unchanged except for a line of bones that travel down his right arm into his hand along with the arm becoming bulkier. He only appears briefly and the player never gets to fight him.

Chaos 2

Chaos is now much stronger after absorbing two Emeralds. He is taller and more muscular. The bones that were in Chaos 1's right arm now run along both of Chaos 2's arms. His head has moved forward and gives him a meaner look, the horns on his head have also changed position to give him a hammerhead style look. He has also developed new powers like a shield to prevent frontal attacks and the ability to transform into a huge ball of water. Knuckles the Echidna fights him in the Hotel Restaurant in Station Square.

Chaos 3

Chaos 3 was never shown in Sonic Adventure due to the circumstances of absorbing two Emeralds at once.

Chaos 4

Chaos changes noticeably after absorbing four Chaos Emeralds. He is now a huge shark-like creature with razor like fins. He fights Sonic, Tails and Knuckles in a small pond in the Mystic Ruins but is defeated. His new powers include being able to shoot energy waves, swimming and turning into four balls that bounce toward the player. If Chaos 4 is out of water he simply floats in the air.

Chaos 5

Chaos 5, like Chaos 3, was never shown in Sonic Adventure due to the circumstances of absorbing two Emeralds at once.

Chaos 6

After absorbing six emeralds, Chaos has changed dramatically once again. It is no longer even vaguely humanoid, but a twenty-five foot tall scorpion-like creature. It also has eight or more eyes, a bulldog-like head and a mouth filled with razor sharp teeth. Its tail is tipped with a pendulum type blade. Both Sonic and Knuckles fought Chaos 6 on the Egg Carrier and Big the Cat fishes Froggy out from inside Chaos. Chaos' new powers include creating powerful shockwaves and trying to suck enemies up to eat them.

Perfect Chaos (Chaos 7)

After absorbing the negative energies of all seven Chaos Emeralds, Chaos has become a god of pure destruction and chaos. It has become a giant snake-like beast with a mouth extending far beyond its eyes, which for the first time have pupils that resemble a reptile's. At the base of its snake-like body seems to be a huge whirlpool and cyclone. It has large tentacles extending from its base. Perfect Chaos' new powers include creating small tornados and firing a huge energy beam. In Sonic X, they give perfect chaos a few more powers, like absorbing projectiles, such as missiles, like a sponge and then shooting them back at the attacker through its mouth, an energy shield, using its tentacles to attack, and crystal spires. It is the last boss in Sonic Adventure, and only Super Sonic has the power to take it down. It should be noted that Perfect Chaos' energy beam has an uncanny resemblance to Godzilla's Atomic ray.

In this form he was able to shoot down Eggman's upgraded Egg Carrier 2 (which was a failsafe in case Chaos rebelled).

Some say this is the closest thing Chaos has to a super form. It may not be Chaos' true super form, because he used the negative energy, so Perfect Chaos may be Chaos' negative super form, for he has never used the positive energy so far, except in the Sonic X comic, in which he absorbed the positive energy of the emeralds to take down Eggman's mecha. In the comic, Chaos' positive super form simply looked like an oversized version of Chaos 0 with the 7 emeralds in it's forehead.

Sonic the Comic

In the UK, Sonic the Comic comics published by Fleetway Chaos is depicted as a much more intelligent and evil beast. Rather than being captured within the Master Emerald, Chaos was actually imprisoned by the Echidnas in a mystic container of some sort (showed fairly briefly). Robotnik somehow got ahold of this container, but never unleashed Chaos from his prison. However, his assistant Grimer released him when he saw that Robotnik was depressed after losing to Sonic so many times; Chaos would devastate the planet and Robotnik would, in exchange for being made leader, use his old Chaos Nullifier devise to defeat the monster. Unfortunately, Grimer hadn't realised that the Nullifier didn't work and thus Chaos couldn't be stopped...

In the comics, Chaos has a 'fear factor' that makes anyone near him tremble with incredible fear when they are around him, to the point where they fall to their knees petrified. Unlike in the game, in the comic Chaos can talk (though in his first attack he seemed little more than a beast) and is actually a transformed Prosecutor of the Drakon Empire, transformed by Chaos Energy back during the ancient war between the Drakons and the Echidnas.

Chaos attacked the Floating Island in order to absorb the Chaos Emeralds, regaining his intelligence as he came into contact with them; Knuckles was forced to jettison the Emeralds, this sacrificing the Island, and the Freedom Fighters tried to locate them before Chaos could. Unfortunately, Robotnik - attempting to bring about Mobius' destruction - deliberately set things up so they couldn't trace the Emeralds and Chaos would get them all first. The creature transformed into Perfect Chaos (which resembled Chaos 6 from the game). Eventually Super Sonic (who at this point in the comic was separate from normal Sonic) absorbed all of Chaos' energy and Chaos reverts back to his fish state.

In the Fleetway adaptation, Chaos' most infamous act was murdering one of Sonic the Comic's longest running characters, Johnny Lightfoot.
