Nikola Maksimović (Serbian Cyrillic: Никола Максимовић; born 25 November 1991) is a Serbian footballer who plays for Serie A club Torino and the Serbian national team as a defender.

Club career

Sloboda and Red Star

He began his career in 2002 when he was acquired by Kosmos, playing in the various youth divisions in Serbia; after two years he moved to Sloga Bajina Bašta.

In 2006 he moved into the ranks of the Sloboda Užice where, two years later, precisely on 16 July 2009, he made his debut in the first team during the game against FBK Kaunas. On 19 September 2010 he received his first yellow card in his career during a match against Spartak Subotica.[1] In a match which took place in Lučani on 5 March 2011 Maksimović scored the first goal of his professional career.[2]

During the winter session of the transfer window in 2012 he was bought by Red Star Belgrade for a figure close to 300,000, where he made his debut on 3 March 2012 during a match against Spartak Zlatibor.[3][4]

Torino

On 23 July 2013 he was loaned to Serie A club Torino with the option to purchase his contract outright.[5] He debuted on 6 October in a match in Genoa against Sampdoria (2–2), entering in the final minutes.[6] He played his first match as a starter on 16 December, won 2–0 away at Udinese,[7] earning a starting spot in the Torino lineup thereafter; first as a central defender, then a right-sided midfielder.

On 27 May 2014, Torino exercised the right to purchase his contract outright. Maksimović signed a contract until 2018.[8][9]

International career

He made 4 appearances for the Serbian national youth teams: two with the under-19[10][11] and two with the under-21.

He was first called up to the Serbian national team on 31 May 2012, for two friendly matches against France[12] and Sweden,[13] in which he was deployed as a starter. He returned in two more friendlies: against Ireland (where he entered the field in the second half), Chile (again from the onset) in a 3–1 win.[14]

Style of play

Able to play as a defensive midfielder (alla "Marcel Desailly," they say of him),[15] he mainly grew up playing as a central defender. He is agile for his considerable height (193 cm), combined with a predisposition for the air and marking opponents.[16] At home he has been repeatedly compared to Nemanja Vidić.[17]
