Javier Mariscal

Javier Mariscal (born 1950 in Valencia) is an internationally-known multi-faceted designer who hails from Spain.

Background

Mariscal studied graphic design at the Escuela Elisava in Barcelona. During that time he created “Rrollo Enmascarado”, an underground comic, from which characters such as “El Senor del Caballito” and “Los Garriris” emerged. He started his professional career with various art exhibitions at the end of the 1970s, during which he began designing in variety of forms, from textile design and graphic illustrations, to furniture design and interior design. In 1979, he created the poster “Bar Cel Ona”, which became an icon of the city.

Awards

In 1988, Mariscal created the mascotCobi” — a Pyrenean Mountain Dog — in advance of the Barcelona 1992 Summer Olympics. The next year, he founded “Estudio Mariscal” in Palo Alto (Poble Nou, Barcelona). In [1995], his design was the winning entry in the international competition for the Expo 2000 mascot. That edition of the World's Fair was held in Hanover.

Current activity

“Estudio Mariscal” employs about thirty artisans who work on a variety of projects, from the design of numerous websites, to the production of several advertising spots in Japan. The company has also done illustrations for international magazines such as The New Yorker, El Mundo and Time Out.

In 2005, Mariscal was selected as a communication design juror at the red dot awards.
