The company was founded in 1994 by SEB Asset management, Investor AB, and US-based AEA Investors.[2] EQT Partners is the investment advisor to all the group's funds. It has more than 220 employees, of whom 120 are investment professionals. The firm and its affiliates have offices in Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Helsinki, Hong Kong, Oslo, London, Munich, New York, Shanghai, Singapore, Stockholm, Warsaw and Zurich. The group has invested more than EUR 11 billion in around 100 companies and exited close to 50.

In 2013, EQT Partners purchased Synagro, a sludge and human waste biosolids hauling company based in the U.S. after Carlyle group took Synagro private in 2007, but failed to turn Synagro around. Synagro entered bankruptcy for missing debt payments and failing to service its heavy debt load.[3] Carlyle purchased Synagro for $772MM, but EQT Partners purchased the defunct company for $455MM, netting Carlyle a loss of over $317MM.

In July 2014, EQT Partners purchased Bureau van Dijk, a leading global publisher of private company information and corporate ownership structures, from Charterhouse Capital Partners backed by 845 million-euro equivalent leveraged loan financing.[4] The acquisition of BvD marks EQT’s intensified commitment to investing in the Benelux region. In May 2014, EQT Partners together with Germany's Strüngmann family had purchased a hearing aid division of the Siemens ADR for 2.15 billion euros ($2.69 billion).[5]
