Mister International is an annual male beauty pageant founded in 2006. It is owned and organized by the Mister International Organization which also organizes the annual Mister Singapore pageant. Along with the Mister World and Manhunt International contests, Mister International is one of the three largest male beauty pageants in the world in terms of the number of national-level competitions, and one of the most anticipated male beauty pageants worldwide. Since the first edition, 72 countries have sent their representative to this pageant, with an annual average of 31 contestants.

The current Mister International is Neil Perez of the Philippines who was crowned on February 14, 2015 in Ansan, Korea. Traditionally, Mister International lives in Singapore during his reign .

History

The first Mister International Pageant was held in Singapore in 2006. It was won by Wissam Hanna from Lebanon, who has gone on to become a TV personality in his native Beirut. Since its debut, the pageant gained popularity, and since then have been held from exotic locations around the globe evolving into a premier international male beauty pageant.

The "Mister International Organization" is based in Singapore and it is owned by the current president, Alan Sim.

Competition formats

Contestants are judged in three areas of preliminary competition: swimwear, evening wear and interview.

During the early years of the pageant, the ten contestants who made the first cut were judged in swimwear and evening wear. After that, the field was narrowed down to a final five for a final question.

From 2010, the number of semifinalists was increased to fifteen for the swimwear competition, with cuts made to ten for the evening wear competition, and then to five. The five who passed that stage competed in a final question, after which the runners-up and winner were announced.

In 2011, for the first time, one of the sixteen semifinalists was selected exclusively by fans via online voting. This happened also in 2012 and 2013. In 2013, one of the ten finalists was chosen by the Mister International Organization to advance to the Top Five.

Contestant selection

Local organizations that wish to select the Mister International contestant for their countries must submit bids to the Mister International Organization for that right. Occasionally, the traditional license holder for a particular country may lose its bid, as has happened in Venezuela and Ecuador.

Usually a country's contestant selection involves pageants in major cities, with the winners competing in a national pageant, but this does not always occur. This happens due to circumstances beyond the control of the national director (i.e., political unrest). Such “castings” are generally discouraged by the Mister International Organization, which prefers national pageants that preserve an aura of respectability and competition.

Some of the most successful national pageants in the past few years have been Indonesia, Philippines, Lebanon which command consistently high interest and television ratings in their respective countries. The current powerhouses that often make the semi-finals are: Venezuela, Philippines, Indonesia, Brazil, Lebanon, Singapore, Czech Republic and Mexico.

The organization makes continual efforts to expand the pageant, but the participation of some countries such as the African nations has proven difficult due to commitment, while others have balked at sending representatives due to the cost. As of 2014, only one country has been present at every Mister International since its inception in 2006: Lebanon, followed by Greece, India, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Venezuela which have been present 8 times.

Main pageant

The main Mister International Pageant is held over a two-week period between October and December. This allowed time for rehearsals, appearances, and the preliminary competition, with the winner being crowned by the previous year's titleholder during the final competition.

According to the organizers, the Mister International contest is more than a male beauty pageant: men aspiring to become Mister International must be intelligent, well-mannered, and cultured. Often a contestant has lost because he did not have a good answer during the question responses rounds; although this section of competition has held less importance during recent pageants than it did previously. Contestants also participate in swimwear and evening wear competitions.

Currently, the final placement of the finalists is determined by a ranked vote, where each judge ranks each of the final five contestants, with the contestant posting the lowest cumulative score becoming the winner. If there is a tie, the higher semifinal scores become decisive.

The winner is assigned a one-year contract with the Mister International Organization, going overseas to attend social and charity events as well as to spread public awareness of healthy lifestyle and living. If the winner, for any reason, cannot fulfill his duties as Mister International, the 1st runner-up takes over.

Aside from the main winner and his runners-up, special awards are also given to the winners of the best National Costume, Mister Photogenic, and Mister Congeniality. The Mister Congeniality award is chosen by the contestants themselves. In recent years, Mister Photogenic has been chosen by popular internet vote (the winner used to be chosen by media personnel covering the event).

Final judgment

The competition for the Mister International title has seen some changes, although there have been several constants throughout its history. All the contestants compete in a preliminary round of judging (called the "Preliminary Competition”) where the field is narrowed to a select number of semifinalists. This number has fluctuated over the years. The first Mister International pageant had 10 semifinalists. In 2011, the number of semifinalists grew to 16 (15 chosen by judges and one chosen by most popular by Internet votes). This lasted until 2014, when the number of 15 was reinstated.
