In the 1980s three wheelchair users met by chance at a Norwegian rehabilitation centre. These young men, all suffering from a paralyzing injury, were not happy with the wheelchairs available in those days. Based on their own experiences, they were convinced that things could be done differently. So, in 1986, they set up their own company called ‘Rullestolekspertene’ (the Wheelchair Experts), with a garage as their workshop.

One of the founders, Tom Myklebust, is still with Handicare, as the company is known today, and continues to play an important role in developing our mobility products. He is a brilliant example of what lies at the heart of everything we do at Handicare: A passion to make everyday life easier. Not only for disabled and elderly people, but also for those who assist them.

“ I believe that making everyday life easier can really make a difference to people’s lives. Sharing this passion with so many enthusiastic and dedicated people at Handicare is a privilege and a pleasure.” - Tom Myklebust Tom Myklebust

A lot has happened since those early days in Norway…

Over the years Handicare has steadily expanded its activities, through organic growth and also through acquisitions and mergers with well-established companies in various countries. All the companies that have joined us have made their own unique contribution to the growth of Handicare, yet we all share the same brand values. Along with our geographic growth, we have also expanded our product range. What started with wheelchairs has evolved to become a complete range of mobility products, transfer and lifting aids, bathroom safety solutions, stairlifts and vehicle adaptations. They are all well-designed, highly functional, and safe and easy to use. And, of course, they help to make everyday life easier! Close to our customers around the world

Handicare worldwideToday, Handicare is a truly international company, with manufacturing and sales organizations in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, the United Kingdom, France, Canada, the United States and China. Additionally, our products are sold through distributors in more than 40 countries. So we are always nearby, very local, and this is reflected in our product offerings. Because we believe it is local expertise and involvement that drive international growth.

Handicare is owned by Nordic Capital Fund VII, a leading private equity fund in Norway.
