Carmen Ibis Novoa (born August 21, 1941)[1] is a Latin American artist, painter, writer and poet. She is from Uruguay born in El Cerro a suburb of Montevideo[2] and immigrated to Melbourne, Australia in 1978 where she currently resides. Carmen has exhibited her works of art at several art exhibitions in Melbourne, Sydney and Uruguay.[3]

Art and literary Career

Carmen has been featured every Spanish[2] national newspaper many times as well as in Uruguay highlighting her art Exhibitions and literary works.[4] In 2005 One particular newspaper in Uruguay featured Carmen in 2 full inside pages in color regarding her boer book Evasion/Evasion and her paintings.[5] In 2005 Carmen held and art exhibition in the Uruguayan national library there she also launched her book Evasion/Evasion.[6]

With the sponsorship of Uruguayan born Telmo Languiller speaker of the Victorian Legislative Assembly, Carmen brought together 24 artists and coordinated a Latin art exhibition in Parliament House, Melbourne building. This was historically recorded as it was the first art exhibition held in Parliament house then again in 2004.[5]

In 2003 Carmen organised the Spanish and Latin American exhibition of painting, sculpture and ceramics at the Wyndham was a very special event as the special guest responsible for opening was Julia Gillard who is a former Australian politician who served as the 27th Prime Minister of Australia, The exhibition played host to many talented Hispanic and Latin American artists, Gillard in a letter of praise referred to it as an outstanding exhibition.[7]

Carmen in 2006 received a AU$1000 grant from City of Brimbank[8] to paint murals on canvas that reflect the local area, this was applied by the Uruguayan Social club of Melbourne where the unveiling took place amidst a celebration with music and dance.[9] 2 of her most recent artistic career highlights was her painting featured in CONFLUENCIAS [10] a very important exhibition to the Latino community in Australia held at The Treasures of the Museum of Freemasonry In Sydney, This exhibition is made possible by a partnership with the consulates of Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru and Uruguay.[11] Her last Exhibition together with fellow Lanino Melbourne based artists LATIN AMERICAN ART EXPRESSIONS held at Melbourne's heritage listed building of The Mission to Seafarers which is a non-profit organisation providing support to seafarers since 1857.[12]

Carmen is an author of 2 books her first Evasion/Evasion is a bilingual publication in 2004 of Spanish poetry with English translations by Beatriz Copello, both books are currently available at The National Library of Australia.[13] Her second book Arabescos published in 2009 is of short stories in Spanish language only.[14]

Philanthropy

Carmen has been a volunteer at the Uruguayan Social club for over 15 year tutoring members in art and running exhibitions with them, With the help of her Son Maurice Novoa Ruiz vice president of the social club at the time she has organised many events through the social club even involving them in receiving a grant from the council in her area to create murals which was celebrated at the club as a highlight of the year.[15]

Carmen has worked extensively for group Uruguayans United who raise money through a festival in Sydney once a year.[16] This money is use for the purchase of used hospital equipment in Australia and then sent as a donation to Uruguay. The Australian government together with the Uruguayan consulate general work together in order to ship the goods to public hospitals in Uruguay. Carmen on has utilised the volunteers of the Uruguayan social club of Melbourne to help raise funds for Uruguayans United.[17]

Carmen her son, husband and another 4 Uruguayans formed a group based in Melbourne for Uruguayan United's charitable cause. A major highlight was in 2001 was the Mildura military base hospital auction. The volunteers for Uruguayans United in Melbourne notified the members in Sydney regarding the auction of all the good of the military base hospital which was closed down. Volunteers Coordinators traveled to Mildura where for the day of the auction to make the purchase, then Carmen's son Maurice Novoa Ruiz who was managing Public relations for Uruguayans United of Melbourne as well as his father Washington Edison Novoa stayed in Midura for three days loading two trucks worth of hospital goods to be sent to Sydney from there they where shipped to Uruguay.[18]
