Tagging WP Volleyball

I made a list of all volleyball categories and made a bot request to tagg all the articles within these categories for WP Volleyball. Please see User talk:Yobot. I checked for wrong categories, but please take a look if you have time :) Sander.v.Ginkel (Talk) 16:39, 16 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I just want to prod this and note that there's a list of categories that Sander.v.Ginkel has proposed adding Volleyball WP templates to at Wikipedia:Bot_requests#Tagg_talk_pages. I intend to file a BRFA within the next few days to complete that tagging, so if anyone objects, please speak up! I looked through the categories myself and they look to be good for tagging, but I encourage members of the project to look through them and let me know if any contain articles that should not receive project tags. Thanks! ~ RobTalk 00:09, 3 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Update

Previous club squads

My edit of adding previous team sqauds to club team articles was reverted by DariaPolonia (see here, and here). Before starting an edit war I just want to discuss it here. My opinion is that previous squads have the same encyclopedic value as the current squad, as encyclopedic information is not time restricted. So my opinion is to keep the old squads on WP. It's a shame to delete every year all this kind of information. But as the article might become long, what about keeping the old squads like:

Thanks for your opinion, Sander.v.Ginkel (Talk) 20:49, 6 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, so I thinks it's nice idea. You know, if squads are from year after year not with long break between two season it's okay to see changes in squad. I'm not sure I explained it enough.

How about that:

We don't need height because it's not the most important thing in tabel and I deleted age because when we have roster from 2007, current age is not needed. So, can we add my example? DariaPolonia (Talk) 22:22, 6 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I figured out that from one year to another we should not delete the previous squads, like Pinkin de Corozal. The solution was another article, Pinkin de Corozal squads. Please do not just delete the previous year squads. Osplace 18:33, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The difference is that I used references and included team awards/qualification. Why, imagine we had then some red links, when the time is right I should find someone or try the whats links here and figure it out that player spent a given season with on club and at that time they won the league championship, with refences given I should just take that reference and include the information in the players article. Tables

Hi everyone.

I have been working a lot with standings tables and I am one of the editors behind Module:Sports table. This module was created to reduce the use of multiple templates to create a standings table (a table often consisted of several templates) as well as making updating easier, tables more uniform and consistent across different sports on wikipedia, and also more MOS compliant.

Now I am looking at Volleyball, especially for Volleyball at the 2016 Summer Olympics, to make all the olympic tables similar, and I was wondering if there are some requests regarding the visual aspect of the volleyball table? It currently looks like Template:2016 Summer Olympics men's volleyball pool A standings while other sports look like Template:2016 Summer Olympics men's football group A standings so there are some differences.

Is "double headers" really needed or is "SF" (Sets for), "SA" (Sets against) and so on enough like other sports? In what order should the columns be? Is there something you want to change or keep in current table? Any input is helpful in adapting the module to your project. Qed237 (talk) 12:02, 18 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Qed237, thanks for the message! What I do miss in tables like this (and in general for team sports at the multi sports events) is pages to the Nation Olympic pages (like Brazil at the 2016 Summer Olympics). For individuals at the Olympics (like  Ellen van Dijk (NED)) you can click to the person AND to the nation page. For team sports is different of course because the team sport and the olympic page is about the nation. But what about someting like:
Brazil Men's volleyball team (BRA) - (instead of  Brazil)
Sander.v.Ginkel Thanks, (Talk) 12:16, 18 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Sander.v.Ginkel: Currently there is a parameter called |team_XXX= (XXX is used to separate teams) that is used for what to display in that columns. The columnheader can be changed so it works for individuals as well by using for example |team_header=Player. By setting |team_BRA={{fbo|BRA}} in football tables we get  Brazil. If you add something else to team_XXX parameter you get something else, for example |team_NED={{flagIOCathlete|[[Ellen van Dijk]]|NED|2012 Summer}} would become  Ellen van Dijk (NED). This is only about how we display teams and individuals and probably something that should be discussed at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Olympics, because the possibility in module already exists. Qed237 (talk) 12:30, 18 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Qed237:, thanks, proposed it over there :) Sander.v.Ginkel (Talk) 12:36, 18 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Sander.v.Ginkel: If we move on from the team/player column, is there some other input regarding the module and using it for volleyball? Qed237 (talk) 13:35, 18 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The only thing I would say is getting a consensus about the layout and merge different appropriate tempalates, in the way that Template:2016 Summer Olympics men's volleyball pool A standings (with templates "Vb cl3 header" and "Vb cl7 team") has the same layout at Template:2012 Summer Olympics men's volleyball pool A standings (with "Vb cl header" and "Vb cl4 team"). Sander.v.Ginkel (Talk) 14:05, 18 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Sander.v.Ginkel: The way I am thinking it would all be the same, but without the double header (currently extra header for Matches, Sets, and Points). And rank would become position. Qed237 (talk) 14:16, 18 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Current format like the official websites use, example pool ranking. The pool ranking criteria of volleyball also differ the time-limited sport which goal score and goal different are pool ranking criteria. Volleyball use the ratio, not different. So, I prefer keep the current format. Something I want to include is number of matches played like other sports. And, once I tried to use  Brazil (BRA), but I was rejected.
I have a question why the Olympic competition pages have to use the templates for each matches' result and ranking table. The pages haven't had too much information. "The purpose of this template is to collect source text used in several articles in one place, in order to minimize maintenance and storage space." for volleyball pages, all of the result and pool ranking templates display only the competition page. So I think it's unnecessary. Noncommittalp (talk) 16:15, 18 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Click on the template page on what links here, and you'll see the template is also used at the nation pages. For the above mentioned London 2012 template see here Sander.v.Ginkel (Talk) 16:27, 18 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I also have another question. Why don't we use the result table like other volleyball competition pages? Noncommittalp (talk) 16:53, 18 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Noncommittalp: The ratio is not a problem, that functionality for having ratio instead if differential already exists. Do we really need a column for each result 3-0, 3-1... and so on? Also what do you mean in your last question? When the functionality has been fully developed it can be used on all volleyball articles. Qed237 (talk) 18:14, 18 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Noncommittalp and Sander.v.Ginkel: Has the rules changed from sorting by points to use wins instead? Qed237 (talk) 21:22, 18 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, number of matches won, points, set ratio, point ratio, head to head. Noncommittalp (talk) 21:46, 18 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Noncommittalp: Great, and when I say that set ratio and point ratio are very easy to fix and the functionality already exists can you agree to use the module for tables? Or is there something else you dont like and needs to be fixed? I can make it look very similar to pool ranking but I dont think "result details" are needed and not the extra headers "matches", "sets" and "points" are needed. Qed237 (talk) 21:53, 18 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Qed237, I have a question. Would you also set the font-size to normal and default corresponding to the standings used in other sports? Raymarcbadz (Talk) 05:42, 19 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Raymarcbadz: Yes all standings tables will have same fontsize (100%). Qed237 (talk) 13:34, 19 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I mean the current table is good for the Pool ranking criteria. In time-limited sports, the tables are also good for the Pool ranking criteria that has points, goal different, goal score, ... . In volleyball, the double-column-header relate to the criteria that I think readers can understand easier. We have match, pts, set, point, left to right follow the criteria. One thing that I think it should add is Pld like other table. And, I haven't understood why the time-limited sports' ranking tables put the pts to the last row. Is it the first criteria? Noncommittalp (talk) 14:31, 20 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I dont think that we completely understand eachother. I will create a submodule in Module:Sports table for volloeyball, now it is a discussion of how you want it to look and what columns to use. Having points on the right is standard in so many sports, dont ask me why, it is just natural. Qed237 (talk) 16:24, 20 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, new submodule has been developed and I have an example

Old table

Template:Vb cl3 header Template:Vb cl7 team Template:Vb cl7 team Template:Vb cl7 team Template:Vb cl7 team Template:Vb cl7 team Template:Vb cl7 team |}

New table
Pos Team Pld W L Pts SW SL SR SPW SPL SPR Qualification
1  Brazil 0 0 0 0 2 1 2.000 0 0 Quarter-finals
2  United States 0 0 0 0 1 2 0.500 0 0
3 Team A3 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
4 Team A4 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
5 Team A5 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
6 Team A6 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
First match(es) will be played: August 2016. Source: [citation needed]
Rules for classification: 1) Matches won; 2) Points; 3) Set ratio; 4) Setpoint ratio; 5) Head-to-head record.

@Noncommittalp, Sander.v.Ginkel, and Raymarcbadz: What do you think now, when you can see an example? Anything that needs fixing and/or changed? Qed237 (talk) 12:02, 27 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Kante4: You are regular editor of many articles including Olympics, what do you think? Qed237 (talk) 15:40, 27 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

For me, I prefer old one. Like I told you before, it's more related the volleyball's pool ranking criteria. I really don't like qualification column. The volleyball page use the qualification legend separate, and I think it's good. One legend for one section. Noncommittalp (talk) 16:15, 27 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The new one is better as this should be used from now on. Have no problems with that. Kante4 (talk) 16:54, 27 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Noncommittalp: The qualification column will stay as it is MOS compliant (older table was not), because some readers are colorblind and we should not only use colors in a table to explain things. What else dont you agree with? All the columns in the old table exists in the new table so you can see all ranking criterias. Qed237 (talk) 22:22, 27 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Very good, I like the new one, but we need to keep the module use to reduce the amount of time for updating result in every involved article. Osplace 02:49, 28 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Osplace: Not sure exactly what you mean, but the new module will of course be used in a template so it only needs to be updated once in one place, see {{2016 Summer Olympics men's water polo group A standings}} where module is in a template and we only need to update it there. Qed237 (talk) 11:13, 28 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'm happy with the new one :) Sander.v.Ginkel (Talk) 11:36, 28 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Similar discussion @Noncommittalp, Osplace, Kante4, and Qed237: as you might be intrested in this as well, I created new templates for linking the teams ({{FlagIOCvb|BRA|2016 Summer}} --> Template:FlagIOCvb and {{FlagIOCvbw|BRA|2016 Summer}} -->Template:FlagIOCvbw), please see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Olympics#Linking of team sports

Matches and templates

I just saw that Template:Volleyballbox lists all sets row by row. To me that is "ugly" and we dont need a bunch of new rows all the time, is it really neccesary? Compare with Template:IceHockeybox where the "periods" are listed within a regular bracket on a single row instead. Any opinions? Qed237 (talk) 15:38, 27 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

If the match table display as the same, I have no problem. Noncommittalp (talk) 16:56, 27 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Noncommittalp: The only problem I see is that the set point totals might be missed. Qed237 (talk) 22:26, 27 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Medal tables

There is an increased use of Template:MedalTableTop in a wrong way, like the one shown here. The template clearly indicates that: allow editors to list an athlete or sportsperson's major medals at the top of their respective biography article(...). Is not intended for volleyball clubs, neither club competitions. This is a major concern. Osplace 15:57, 28 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Only medals won for the national team should be there (WC, Continental, Olympics). No team wins. Those can be added in the prose and honour section. Kante4 (talk) 16:33, 28 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly, we want this information, but that is not the right way to include it. Osplace 22:50, 28 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@DariaPolonia: We would like to hear from you in this matter. Osplace 18:17, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hello. Okay, I read your conversation here and you're right. I added clubs' achievements in that way because all clubs had different 'achievements' section... So tell me, how it should look like...? DariaPolonia (talk) 20:29, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@DariaPolonia and Kante4: In first place, not medal template... --Osplace 20:18, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Is outrageous to read that volleball is not listed under WP:NSPORT. I tried very hard to reach concensous about it. Is needed. --Osplace 01:27, 29 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Osplace; I am ready to help and start a new discussion about volleyball notability and try to reach consensus. I think for the discussion to be useful one should coordinate the discussion. An experienced person about the issue like you. Tomcat313 (talk) 12:11, 10 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I would really like to see that come true, thanks Tomcat313 (talk · contribs · count). Lets try to start the discussion this weekend. --Osplace 22:16, 16 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Volleyball box

Hi, What does this project think about a new volleyball box? Currently Template:Volleyballbox is used but that box gets very "high" without much information, having one set per row and a lot of rows. Other sports with "sets" or "periods" I have seen, like hockey has something like Template:IceHockeybox, that is much clearer, but same information is still shown. I was planing to create a new box for Volleyball to match other sports, but thought I better see what editors here thinks.

Any thoughts? Qed237 (talk) 10:50, 30 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I totaly agree :) Sander.v.Ginkel (Talk) 12:30, 30 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Anyone else with any thoughts, pinging other editors that has been involved in this talkpage and olympic pages. @Osplace, Kante4, and Noncommittalp: what do you think? Qed237 (talk) 15:18, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

An example (sandbox?) would be nice. Have no idea what you are thinking of, tbh. Kante4 (talk) 15:42, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Kante4: Okay, I am on it. Qed237 (talk) 15:46, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Osplace, Kante4, Noncommittalp, and Sander.v.Ginkel: Example can be seen at Special:Permalink/718452234. I am also considering changing the "width" of the part on the right so that referees fit on one row. Qed237 (talk) 16:10, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
For 5 set matches the difference gets bigger and when there are a lot of matches on top of eachother like in the Olympic we reduce the amount of rows. Qed237 (talk) 16:14, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good for me. No space between scores, bold the winner and it's good. Kante4 (talk) 16:14, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Kante4: Someone had messed up the fontsize in volleybox so not working. I fixed it now in sandbox and it is same as hockeybox. See Special:Permalink/718453971. Any ideas on how I should proceed. Call this new one for "volleyballbox2" and say the original "volleyballbox" is deprecated? Remove "volleyballbox" from Category:Sports match box templates and add "volleyballbox2" instead? (Unless someone opposes of course). Qed237 (talk) 16:22, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Looks better the new box :). The only additional option I can think of is the option to add an image of the game. Sander.v.Ginkel (Talk) 16:24, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Sander.v.Ginkel:
Gold.
No, we should have no images on that template. Images ilustrating articles should be used [[File:gold.jpg|thumb|right|150px|Gold.]] in an appropiate way. Take for example the GA article 2015 Tour de Yorkshire, but it includes text and we use no text at all. We should one day include text in our articles. Osplace 18:14, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, no pics. Kante4 (talk) 18:26, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe you should consider 'MVP' as additional option? DariaPolonia (talk) 20:32, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I could, but it has not been used in other match boxes as far as I know. Is it really needed? Qed237 (talk) 18:41, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Sometimes is useful to know who was MVP in finale for example. But maybe somebody else should say his/her opinion. DariaPolonia (talk) 20:55, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Match MVP? We are setting up the Olympics. There is an awards section. There is no match mvp. Osplace 19:15, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It we update/create a new box it should be used in more than one competition. Qed237 (talk) 19:22, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You do not understand at all. We do have standards. Yes, templates should be used everywhere. Is there any high level competition with match mvp? There is not. We do have World Championships and Olympics as models and examples for everything else. Osplace 19:25, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I dont do much work in volleyball, but in football there are a lot of tournaments with MVP for each match. Just because Olympic games and world championship does not have it, does not mean it should not be shown in other competitions. Qed237 (talk) 19:34, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Exactly, but this box is for volleyball, am I right? There is not such award in volleyball, we do not need that. We use a separate section for awards. Volleyball uses awards at the end of competitions or professional seasons. Spanish league uses weekly mvp, but is the only one I know. FIVB system used in main competitions, continental championships and regional games do not include ever match mvp. Are you going to be working in a separate one for matchs with match mvps? --Osplace 19:51, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No it will all be in the same template, but it is easy to add MVP as parameter that is never shown unless being called. I juat want to know if it will be called or if it will be a useless parameter that is never used. Qed237 (talk) 19:53, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No MVP, it's useless. Kante4 (talk) 03:56, 4 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Qed237 and Osplace:So, should we use it (if finished)? Kante4 (talk) 21:26, 22 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Kante4: I have been overloaded with work (now that all football leagues is coming to an end) so I have not had the time to create it yet, but the code is ready in Template:Volleyballbox/sandbox (sandbox of the old template). I am all for using it (and had planned to introduce it when I had the time), so if you feel like you have the time please go ahead and create a template. Just one suggestion, in Special:Permalink/718453971, which is not really permanent since I call a template, the referees does not fit on one row, so my suggestion is to make the right column a bit wider. I think both the team and score column can be a bit smaller. Qed237 (talk) 21:32, 22 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. Can't we use just simply use referees without the "()"? Kante4 (talk) 21:36, 22 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Kante4: Is there always more than one referee? Anyway what do you think now if you look at Special:Permalink/718453971? Are the widths okay? Qed237 (talk) 21:42, 22 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Qed237: In those tournament we cover, yes. Osplace has more input about that but i never saw less than one. Width looks good. Kante4 (talk) 21:45, 22 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Qed237: Yes, they are always two. I would like to suggest the "()" keep existance. That is, if we are talking about the referees nat. The columns for the referees in the new volleyball box look very good. Nothing further, --Osplace 17:56, 23 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Qed237 and Osplace: The "()" should stay for nations, just not at the word "referee". Kante4 (talk) 19:25, 24 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Qed237 and Kante4: Yes, now I can understand what you mean, there is no referee(s), because we know for sure that there are always two of them. They are just for nations (MEX). Good to go! --Osplace 20:47, 24 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Qed237 and Osplace: So, we use the one for the Olympics? I would say yes. Kante4 (talk) 14:07, 25 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Osplace and Kante4: I would also say yes, definately use that one for olympics. Had planned to create it this week, but unforseen events happened yesterday and today so it will have to wait until tonight or possibly tomorrow, unless you want to create it yourself now. Qed237 (talk) 14:12, 25 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Osplace and Kante4: All of the Olympic volleyballmatches has now been updated to use this new volleybox, {{Volleyballbox2}}. Feel free to check for errors, but it should be okay. I also created matches for the women as it made no sense to have one display for men and an other for women (they has table of results). Finally I took the liberty to add the seeds in the bracket, which good be good info in the first round (not all rounds), and with that all sports may use the Module:RoundN for brackets. Please comment on that as well. Qed237 (talk) 13:55, 26 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Good job. I don't think the seeds need to be there. Kante4 (talk) 16:11, 26 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Qed237, Kante4, and Noncommittalp: Very good! When the time is right, countries articles must be filled with games, squads and pool standings templates. --Osplace 16:40, 26 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Auto-assessment of article classes

Following a recent discussion at WP:VPR, there is consensus for an opt-in bot task that automatically assesses the class of articles based on classes listed for other project templates on the same page. In other words, if WikiProject A has evaluated an article to be C-class and WikiProject B hasn't evaluated the article at all, such a bot task would automatically evaluate the article as C-class for WikiProject B.

If you think auto-assessment might benefit this project, consider discussing it with other members here. For more information or to request an auto-assessment run, please visit User:BU RoBOT/autoassess. This is a one-time message to alert projects with over 1,000 unassessed articles to this possibility. ~ RobTalk 01:28, 4 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Volleyballbox2 auto-bolding

I had a recent discussion with @Qed237: about revising the template mentioned in the subject that tackles auto-formatting of the winning team. The proposed revision takes care of bolding the winning team via the match score input.
The following were the points raised by Qed237 against the proposal and directly below each are my refutations.

1. Revising the template will disorganize the formatting applied on teams that are manually bolded.
— Upon examination of the transclusion count of the template, almost all of the transclusion done was for the volleyball tournament in the Olympics, which has not yet started. So its safe to assume that no manual bolding is done to the teams.
2. "Perhaps teams should not be bolded at all.
— One good side of bolding the winning team is that it gives a sort of contrast from the losing team. For readers that are skimming through the pages, its really helpful to easily distinguish the winning and the losing team.
3. Strange situations and future tournaments where bolding is not preferred.
— a additional parameter, for example boldteam= false (default value = true), can be incorporated along with the proposal to suppress automatic bolding of the winning team if not preferred.

Overall, the primary purpose of this proposal is to ease and lessen editing for users. I have seen instances where editors made improper bolding. With the addition of auto-bolding, editors no longer need to deal with formatting the winning team. With all that said, I wish that the consensus approve of it.
