Sofia the First |
Elena of Avalor is an American computer-animated television series that debuted on July 22, 2016 on Disney Channel.[1][2] The series is about a Latina princess and her family. Elena of Avalor takes place in the same universe as Disney Junior's Sofia the First.[3][4][5] A television movie titled Elena and the Secret of Avalor is scheduled to premiere in fall 2016, which will explain how Elena was trapped in the magical amulet for decades before being set free by Princess Sofia.[6]
Plot
Teenage princess Elena has saved her magical kingdom, Avalor, from an evil sorceress and must now learn to rule as its crown princess. Elena's adventures will lead her to understand that her new role requires thoughtfulness, resilience and compassion, the traits of all truly great leaders. Since she is only 16-years-old, she has a Grand Council composed of her grandparents, older cousin Chancellor Esteban and a new friend, Naomi, to give advice along the way. Elena also looks to her younger sister Isabel, her friends Mateo and Gabe, a spirit animal named Zuzo, and a trio of magical flying creatures called Jaquins (a race of winged jaguars) for guidance and support.

Development
The series' creator and executive producer Craig Gerber said; "It was very important to us that, since we were doing a show with a kingdom inspired by Latin American culture, that we get that right. Even though it's a fairytale world, there are things that feel very authentic." Story editor Silvia Olivias stated "We have cultural consultants help us every step of the way. They read everything from the premise all the way through the final draft." On the show's music, Latin music consultant Rene Camacho said "The styles of music we're using overall — it's all Latin-based, it's very festive." Consultant Diane Rodriguez stated that the show "has this visual element that’s so evocative, it takes the look of the Latino culture, of the Americas, almost to another level."[15]
Broadcast
A sneak peek of the series aired on Disney Channel (UK and Ireland) on July 15, 2016 following another peek on the channel's YouTube on July 12.[16]

Princess Elena's journey began long ago when her parents and kingdom were taken from her by the evil sorceress, Shuriki. Elena bravely faced the sorceress to protect her little sister, Princess Isabel, and her grandparents. In the process, her magical amulet pulled her inside its enchanted jewel, saving her life but imprisoning her at the same time. While Elena is the rightful heir to the throne, she is only 16, and must learn to rule Avalor with the help of a Grand Council comprised of her Grandfather Tito, Grandmother Cici and Royal Advisor, Duke Esteban. With some magical friends by her side – Mateo, a wizard-in-training, and Skylar, a magical flying Jaquin – Princess Elena's adventures will help her understand that her new role requires thoughtfulness, resilience and compassion, the traits of all truly great leaders.
