Rajasthan is a place in India which is highly rich in culture and one thing which makes this culture even richer is the dance Ghoomar. This Rajasthani dance form is a highly interesting dance form. People who dance express their emotions through this. It is mostly performed by women of Rajasthan and is kind of a dying art.[1]
Ghoomar is a traditional folk dance of Rajasthan, India and Sindh‚ Pakistan. The Ghoomar dance is the distinctive dance of the Bhils and a community dance of the Rajputs. It is performed by women in swirling robes, and accompanied by men and women singing together.[2]
Etymology of the word Ghoomar and what Women Wear
This folk dance gets its name from ‘ghoomna’, the pirouetting which displays the spectacular colors of the flowing ‘ghaghara’, the long skirt of the Rajasthani women. There is an amazing grace as the skirts flair slowly while the women twirl in circles, their faces covered with the help of veils. They use measured steps and various graceful inclinations of the body, beating palms or snapping fingers at particular cadences while singing lilting songs. Mostly Goddess Saraswati is worshiped during this dance. This dance is usually done in a circle.
Traditional Songs on which Ghoomar is performed
Ghoomar being a traditional dance form of Rajasthan has a lot of traditional songs in it. Some of the songs on Ghoomar are Gorband, Podina, Rumal and Mor Bole Re. The women who dance, sing these songs themselves.They use claps and other sounds too, to make them dance look even better. These songs can be on royal legends or their traditions. It is a treat to watch them dancing. This dance is performed only on some special occasions and the women who dance, keeps on dancing for hours and sometimes it is even the whole night.[3]
