  • Comment: according to the web site
:"GigaScience will cease to be published by BioMed Central as of December 31st, 2016. The journal will continue in cooperation with a new publisher. Please visit this site for information regarding the new publisher and submission process.
:BioMed Central will continue to host an archive of all articles previously published in the journal and all articles published in GigaScience during its time with BioMed Central will remain fully searchable via the BioMed Central website. DGG ( talk ) 00:42, 28 May 2017 (UTC)
  • Comment: This journal is not indexed. Indexing is the primary criteria for inclusion. Please see WP:NJOURNALS. Non-indexed journals are routinely deleted from Wikipedia and that is likely to be the fate here. We can accept this if notability is demonstrated through other means, primarily independent coverage in reliable sources. The current sources are, for the most part, not independent. ~Kvng (talk) 15:20, 13 November 2016 (UTC)

  • Comment: Please look at WP:JOURNALCRIT for the criteria for notability of academic journals. In particular you should say what indexes cover it, and whether it has an impact factor. LaMona (talk) 21:58, 20 July 2016 (UTC)

GigaScience is a scientific journal that began publishing peer reviewed scientific articles in 2011.[citation needed] It is included in Science Citation Index, with an impact factor of 7.463 and is ranked #6 in the Multidisciplinary Sciences Category as of 2015 by Thomson Reuters..[1]. The journal specializes in presenting research and large data-sets that result from work in the biomedical and life sciences[2].

GigaScience was co-published by Biomed Central and BGI, the worlds largest genomics institute.[3] In 2016, it left BioMed Central to form a new partnership between BGI and Oxford University Press[4].

Open Science

The journal has a strong commitment to open data and open access, allowing readers to access data referenced in each journal through its data repository, Giga DB. All of the data in this database is referenced through a Digital object identifier (DOI), which provides a constant reference to the data from each of the published articles.[citation needed]

GigaScience also provides a Galaxy-based platform to analyze the data, GigaGalaxy. The journal has tried to promote the use of Galaxy pipelines as publishable research outputs through its 'Galaxy Series' of articles[5].

The journal has promoted the idea of a 'deconstructed paper' where the traditional research article is split into multiple research objects including the article, the data and the software[6][7].

GigaScience model for deconstructed science publication

Over the years, this model has extended to include promotion of pre-prints, open peer review, separate publication of protocols (such as Protocols.io) and publication of software provisioning documents (such as Docker and Vagrant).[citation needed]

Indexing

The journal is indexed by several bibliographic database systems.[citation needed]

Impact Factor

The journal has an impact factor of 7.463, as provided by the Science Citation Index. This summary measure of quality has been considered as important but also limited for some years[12][13]

GigaScience states that impact factor "does not properly promote best practices in science" and so they have signed the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment, and will not use their impact factor for promotional purposes[14]

Editorial Team

The Editor in Chief is Laurie Goodman, the former editor of Genome Research at Cold Spring Harbor.[15] The Executive Editor Scott Edmunds was a Senior Editor at BioMed Central, one of GigaScience's current publishers.[16] [17]
