Erika Nordby
[edit]- ... that Canada's Miracle Child "captured the world with her smile"?
- Reviewed: Black Action Movement
5x expanded by Nikkimaria (talk). Self nom at 21:06, 1 January 2013 (UTC)
- DYKcheck shows 5x expansion (seems clear going from 124 -> 6764 bytes since 1 Jan 2013), sufficient size (3989 chars now). Weirdly enough, DYKCheck also falsely flagged it as a stub :-/. Citations seem WP:RS and sufficient, no policy vios such as npov, copyvio, img use discovered, although there seems to be a prevalence on first names usage throughout the article (could doublecheck with WP:LASTNAME to ensure correct style, noting that her mother is also referenced and requires name disambig). QPQ is present, albeit shared at Black Action Movement. However, the hook doesn't seem good to go as is - although based on referencing, the "captured the world" phrase doesn't seem to contain enough context. Perhaps the hook should be rewritten to specifically indicate Nordby inspired the Stompin Tom Connors' song where that phrase came from (and perhaps add extlink with that ref: [1]). Or maybe a new hook involving another supported aspect of Nordby's survival. Dl2000 (talk) 01:20, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
- Note: I took care of the stub problem; it was a talk page rating from 2007, which I have reset to a more appropriate Start class. BlueMoonset (talk) 02:34, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
- ALT1... that Canada's Miracle Child "captured the world with her smile," according to Stompin' Tom?
- ALT2... that the miracle baby inspired a study of suspended animation? Nikkimaria (talk) 03:30, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
- First, thanks to BlueMoonset for the destub. Seems is was actually this DYKCheck user who was the bug :-/. Still having a bit of pause with the hook. For one thing, note Miracle Child is a disambiguation page; it seems less problematic if the hook were to at least mention Nordby by name. Perhaps hooks along these lines:
- ALT3 ... that the Stompin' Tom Connors song "Erika Nordby (Canada's Miracle Child)" was inspired by a girl who survived hypothermia?
- ALT4 ... that hypothermia survivor Erika Nordby, who was without a heartbeat for two hours, inspired a study on suspended animation?
- Dl2000 (talk) 00:01, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
- New reviewer needed to check all the hooks, keeping in mind the initial reviewer's comments on the original hook and first two ALTs. BlueMoonset (talk) 02:13, 21 January 2013 (UTC)
- Should have updated earlier, but concur with getting a new reviewer to finish this as I'm now tainted with COI for the second two ALTs. Dl2000 (talk) 03:02, 21 January 2013 (UTC)
- There's absolutely no way the outdoor temperature anywhere in Canada would be 24 C in February. Please check and correct this. Prioryman (talk) 23:11, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
- Nice catch, seems a minus sign got dropped along the way. Now fixed. Nikkimaria (talk) 23:13, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

- Partial review here... I'm not convinced that ALTs 2 and 4 are correct. The press release about the medical study of suspended animation does mention Erika's story, but it doesn't suggest that her experience inspired the medical study. As I read it, her story was included in the press release only to generate reader interest. AGF on the sourcing for the hooks about the song. I suggest rewording them as follows:
- ALT1A ... that Canada's Miracle Child "captured the world with her smile," according to Stompin' Tom Connors? --Orlady (talk) 21:02, 28 January 2013 (UTC)
- ALT3A ... that 13-month old Erika Nordby inspired a song by Stompin' Tom Connors? --Orlady (talk) 21:02, 28 January 2013 (UTC)
- ALTs 1 and 3 are good to go (AGF on the sourcing). ALTs 2 and 4 are more interesting (IMO), but they aren't supported by sources. After looking at the scientific paper on the suspended animation study (abstract; full text requires additional access), I edited the article to eliminate the suggestion that Erika Nordby's experience inspired the study. Nothing in the scientific paper indicates a connection. --Orlady (talk) 15:14, 29 January 2013 (UTC)
