Overboard is a 2018 American romantic comedy film directed by Rob Greenberg, written by Greenberg, Bob Fisher and Leslie Dixon and starring Eugenio Derbez, Anna Faris, Eva Longoria, John Hannah and Swoosie Kurtz.[4][5] A remake of the 1987 film of the same name, the plot follows a working class single mother who convinces a rich playboy with amnesia that they are a married couple.

Overboard was released in the United States on May 4, 2018. It has grossed $14 million and received mixed reviews from critics, who praised Faris' performance but criticized the film for its bland story and not adding anything new to the original.

Summary

Kate (Anna Farris) is a single, working-class mother of three who's hired to clean a luxury yacht that belongs to Leonardo (Eugenio Derbez) a selfish, spoiled and wealthy Mexican playboy. After unjustly firing Kate, Leonardo falls off the boat and wakes up with no memory of who he is. To get payback, Kate shows up at the hospital and convinces the confused amnesiac that they're married. As Leonardo tries to get used to manual labor and his new family, Kate starts to wonder how long she can keep fooling her fake husband.

Cast

Production

In March 2017, It was announced that Anna Faris and Eugenio Derbez will star in a re-imagining of the original 1987 film, with Rob Greenberg and Bob Fisher co-directing. The main roles are reversed from the original film. Derbez will portray a wealthy man who falls off of his yacht and is found by Faris' character, a single mother who convinces him that he is her husband.[6] Filming began in Vancouver in May 2017.[8] Eva Longoria joined the cast that month.[7]

Release

Overboard was originally scheduled to be released on April 20, 2018 by Lionsgate Films.[9] In January 2018, the release date was rescheduled for April 13, 2018.[10] In March 2018, the film's release was rescheduled for May 4, 2018,[11] to avoid competing against the rescheduled release of Avengers: Infinity War.[12]

Reception

Box office

In the United States and Canada, Overboard was released alongside Tully and Bad Samaritan, and was projected to gross around $12 million from 1,623 theaters in its opening weekend.[13] The film made $4.8 million on its first day, including $675,000 from Thursday night previews, an improvement from the $450,000 made by Derbez's How to Be a Latin Lover the year before. It went on to debut to $14.8 million, finishing second behind holdover Avengers: Infinity War; 41% of its audience was Latino.[14]

Critical response

On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 30% based on 50 reviews, and an average rating of 4.3/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "Overboard makes poor use of the ever-charming Anna Faris – and chooses questionable source material – to offer a remake that fails to clear the fairly low bar set by the original."[15] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 45 out of 100, based on 23 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[16] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A–" on an A+ to F scale, while PostTrak reported filmgoers gave it an 83% overall positive score.[14]

Variety's Owen Gleiberman wrote, "Overboard has been made with enough bubbly comic spirit and skill that the gender switch turns out to be a smart move, from both an entertainment and commercial vantage."[17] Conversely, Johnny Oleksinski of the New York Post wrote "Hollywood isn't just churning out crummy remakes of great films anymore — now it's doing awful remakes of mediocre films. For evidence, see Overboard. Or, rather, don't."[18]
