Henbury School is a state secondary school with academy status in Henbury, Bristol, England. It will join the Greenshaw Learning Trust on April 1, 2019.[1]

History

The school opened in 1956, and was formally opened in 1958 by Clement Attlee. Its first Headmaster was John Luget from 1956 to 1976. In 2005, it was rebuilt under a Private Finance Initiative. As of January 2012, it had 739 students. The school has achieved Art College status which increases the funding that the school receives for art-related studies. A number of projects have spawned from the receiving of Art College status. These include piloting the Community Transformers scheme.[2] It became an academy on 1 June 2012.[3]

Academic achievement

The school achieved its best ever GCSE scores in 2012, the table below shows the percentage of students hitting the key measure of 5 A*-C including English and Mathematics.[4]

The School Day

The newly reformed school day at Henbury School (as of January 2019) makes lessons 55 minuets long rather than an hour, allowing extra time for the ne roll call, and tutor time reading programme allowing students to be calm and prepared for the start of the day.

  • 8:47-8:50- Students Make their way to morning roll call in tutor groups
  • 8:50-8:55- Roll call starts and tutors make equipment, uniform and other checks to students to prepare them for the day.
  • 8:55-9:15- Students go to tutor groups and start daily reading programme, where students follow their books with rulers while a member of staff or their tutors read to them, unless Y11 where students go to Period 0
  • 9:15-10:50- Students go to Period 1 of the day
  • 10:50-11:55- Students go to Period 2 of the the day
  • 11:55-11:25- Students have Break time for 20 minuets
  • 11:25-12:30- Students go to Period 3
  • 12:30-13:00- Students go to lunch time
  • 13:00-13:55- Students go to Period 4
  • 13:55-14:50- Students go to Period 5
  • 14:50-15:00- Students go to afternoon tutor where they read their own books for 10 minuets Also Known as DEAR time (Drop Everything and Read)
  • 15:00-16:00- Students for Y7-Y10 Go home while Y11 Start Period 6
