Hashtag United Football Club is a football club based in Tottenham, London, England, currently managed by Jay Devereux. Founded in 2016, they gained notability due to recording their matches, making videos around them, and posting them on YouTube to the Spencer FC Channel. They later moved to the Hashtag United YouTube channel. In 2018, they entered the English football league system and currently play in the Isthmian League Premier Division.

History

Hashtag United Football Club were formed in March 2016 by Spencer Owen, a football YouTuber who went by the name Spencer FC. Spencer had began making YouTube videos in 2013 as a student at the University of Reading. The team initially consisted of friends from school and university.[3]

From their foundation, the team primarily played exhibition matches, filmed them, and posted them to their YouTube account. By September 2016, the team's Instagram had over 100,000 followers, their Twitter 41,000, and a 'penalty challenge' uploaded to YouTube was watched by more than one million times. Hashtag played teams including a Comedians XI who they beat 19–1, Google and a Manchester City staff team, with opponents fielding former professional footballers such as Paul Dickov, Graeme Le Saux and Ray Parlour, or celebrities including Omid Djalili. At one point in 2016, the club was close to signing professional footballer Adebayo Akinfenwa.[3] In 2017 the club won the EE Wembley Cup, a competition that Spencer FC had won in 2015 and 2016.[4]

In 2018 the club joined the English football league system, initially being placed in Division One of the Spartan South Midlands League, before being moved to the Eastern Senior League after appealing that it was more suited to their Essex roots.[5] After joining the pyramid, Spencer Owen stepped down as manager and was replaced by former East Thurrock United assistant manager Jay Devereux.

Ground

After joining the Eastern Counties League, the club began playing at the Coles Park Stadium, groundsharing with Haringey Borough.
