Loona (stylized as LOOΠΔ) is a South Korean girl group formed by Blockberry Creative. Its twelve members were revealed in a periodic fashion, corresponding to their Korean name Idarui Sonyeo ( ), which translates to "Girl of the Month".

Loona commenced their pre-debut project in August 2016, with each member releasing a promotional single over the next eighteen months.[1] The group has formed three sub-units: Loona 1/3, Loona Odd Eye Circle and Loona yyxy. Their debut EP as a full ensemble, [+ +] (2018), was supported by the lead single "Hi High".

Name

Loona's English name is derived from the Hangul letters ㅇㄷㅇㅅㄴ, each an initial consonant in the syllabic blocks that make 이달의 소녀 (Idarui Sonyeo). When rearranged to ㄴㅇㅇㄷㅅ, it resembles LOONA in the Latin alphabet.[2] Loona is also a homonym for luna which is spanish for moon, being an aspect their concept.

History

2016–2018: Pre-debut project and Mix Nine

On October 2, 2016, Blockberry Creative announced through Naver that they would be debuting their first girl group through an 18-month long pre-debut project.[3] Between October 2016 and January 2017, four members (HeeJin, HyunJin, HaSeul, and YeoJin) were revealed; each member released a single album typically consisting of a solo track and another track performed with other revealed members, under the group's Korean name Idarui Sonyeo (Korean이달의 소녀; lit. Girl of the Month)[4] In March 2017, the group's first sub-unit, Loona 1/3, was introduced, consisting of previously revealed members HeeJin, HyunJin, HaSeul and a new member, ViVi.[5] Loona 1/3 released the extended play Love & Live and accompanying single of the same name on March 13, 2017,[6] with a television promotion on SBS's Inkigayo,[7] They released a repackaged edition of the extended play, titled Love & Evil, on April 27.[8] The repackage featured the single "Sonatine" and the discription of the music video featured the first canonical lore behind the group. [9]

Between April 2017 and July 2017, members ViVi, Kim Lip, JinSoul, and Choerry released their single albums, continuing the same Girl of the Month pattern.[10] All music videos moving forward contained lore about their music and what Blockberry Creative coined as the "LOOΠΔVERSE".[11] In September 2017, three members, HeeJin, HyunJin and HaSeul, auditioned for JTBC's reality show Mix Nine; HeeJin and HyunJin passed the audition stage making it onto the show,[12] where HyunJin placed Top 18 and HeeJin placed fourth in the finale.[13] The group's second sub-unit, Loona Odd Eye Circle, consisting of JinSoul, Kim Lip and Choerry, released the extended play Mix & Match on September 21, 2017, and began promotions on Mnet's M Countdown.[14] The English version of their song "Loonatic" was released on October 23.[15] On October 31 they released a repackaged edition of the extended play, titled Max & Match, which included three new songs.[16]

Between the months of November 2017 and January 2018, they released the solo single albums for new members Yves, Chuu, and Go Won, continuing the monthly pattern along with the digital single "The Carol 2.0" sung by Yves, Vivi, and Choerry.[17] In March 2018, they released the solo single album for final member, Olivia Hye.[18] On May 30, 2018, the group's third sub-unit, Loona yyxy, made their debut with the extended play Beauty & the Beat. The single "love4eva" featuring Canadian musician Grimes was released the same day with an accompanying music video.[19]

On August 7, 2018, Loona released "Favorite" as a digital pre-debut single.[20] The video was to be their first as a full group and focuses on the group's choreography.[21]

2018–2019: Debut with [+ +] & [X X]

On August 15, Blockberry published the official tracklist for [+ +] (read as plus plus) as their debut extended play as a full group. [22] The extended play was released on August 20, 2018 alongside the lead single, "Hi High".[23] [+ +] was repackaged as [X X] (read as multiple multiple) on February 19, 2019, with six additional tracks, including a new single, "Butterfly".[24]

2019-Present: 365 & Comeback

On December 13, 2019, Loona released a single called "365" as an appreciation song to their fan for waiting for their upcoming release. [25] The song reached No. 1 on iTunes’s Top Songs chart in the United States and marks them as the first Korean girl group to achieve No. 1 on both the Top Songs and Top Albums charts in the United States. [26]. The next day, the group released a teaser title "#1" in anticipation of their upcoming album. [27]

Lore

Möbius strip featured on the alternate website for BlockBerry Creative which has since been removed

The Loonaverse (stylized as LOOΠΔVERSE) is the fictional universe the members of Loona live in depicted through their music videos and teasers. Its existence was officially announced on April 26, 2017, but was given its name on May 22 of the same year.[28][29] The members of Loona 1/3 and YeoJin reside on earth, Odd Eye Circle between the Earth and the cosmos, referenced as middle earth, and yyxy in a utopia known as Edenism which lays beyond the Earth and middle earth. [30] The Loonaverse also exists on a möbius strip.[31] The first time BlockBerryCreative confirmed this was on the dlrowehtanool website brought to the public by Yves, Chuu, and Go Won's teaser images where the link featured was spelled backward.[32] A single gif of a möbius strip was available on the website, with the Loona logo in the center of it.

The members of Loona 1/3 portray the most realistic and practical sceneries that can easily be found in any school. HeeJin, HyunJin, HaSeul and ViVi start their stories in France, Japan, Iceland, and Hong Kong respectively to become unified as one. [33] HeeJin and HyunJin are close high school friends and were introduced to HaSeul and YeoJin, HaSeul being a mother figure. YeoJin ends up getting lost in the woods and ViVi, an android from Hong Kong is introduced to the group by JinSoul. [34] [35] The girls of Odd Eye Circle were born at opposite ends and awoken into the loonaverse as their odd eyes began to glow. They were determined to bring their colors into the world and gather together their moons to form a full circle. [36] Since Choerry resided on Earth, HaSeul and YeoJin joined forces to help her with the transition process to middle Earth. [37] While in Eden, Yves bites the apple to be exiled to Earth and the other members of yyxy follow on a forbidden quest to find their identities. Each girl of yyxy was given a respective emotion: Yves as faith, Chuu as hope, Go Won as love, and Olivia Hye as anger. When all their emotions gather, a Neoanthropinae gene of yyxy manifests as "yy" and "xy". When all 12 members are together, they meet their full potential and cause a Butterfly effect through music for the listeners to gain courage, find oneself, and raise one’s voice. [38] [39]
