Technology Development and Education

Vigyan Ashram advocates learning by doing and has developed new technologies in part through education programs. The Ashram began with a Diploma in Basic Rural Technologies (DBRT) program, a one-year residential course, mainly for school and college dropouts in rural areas. Students learn a broad range of skills, from agriculture, electronics and motor rewinding, lathe machining, welding, and food processing. They can also choose preferred skills to develop more deeply, and put their skills to use in community service.

As of 2014, their IBT course had been conducted in more than 100 schools around Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Goa, and Karnataka.

The Ashram was also chosen for development as the first Fab lab outside MIT, which is now used not only in educational programs, but in helping people develop technology solutions, too.[2]

External Support

Many Government, private organizations and individual donors support the program. Trustees of the Indian Institute of Education manage Vigyan Ashram.
