Vaati (グフー, Gufū), the Wind Mage, is an antagonist from the Legend of Zelda series. His most common appearance is a black orb with a single eye, although his original appearance was that of a purple Minish. He is the second-most recurring major villain in the series, after Ganon. He bears a slight resemblance to Dethl (the final boss of Link's Awakening).

Minish Cap

The humanoid Vaati, after using the Minish Cap to become Hylian sized, but before he transformed into a demon.

Vaati's first chronological appearance was in The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap. He appears as a young sorcerer with powerful magic, who one day unleashes monsters upon Hyrule and turns Princess Zelda to stone. He appears several times throughout the game to taunt the hero Link, and is usually accompanied by his dedicated sound effect, a high-pitched laugh.

Later in the game, it is revealed that Vaati was once a Minish who became corrupted by the evil that lay in the hearts of men, and who used the Minish Cap (a creation of his master, Ezlo, whom Vaati transformed into the Minish Cap) to transform himself into a Hylian sorcerer. Vaati wanted ultimate power, and sought to obtain the mystical light force; a source of limitless magical power contained within Hyrule's princess. When he finally learned of its location he took the princess to Hyrule Castle to complete his plan. There, Vaati managed to steal most of the light force from Princess Zelda, using it to transform himself into a god-like being in order to combat Link. He was defeated and, in a desperate attempt to survive, took the form of the one-eyed creature he is most commonly seen as today. However, despite his newfound power, Vaati was defeated by Link and was later sealed within the reforged Picori Blade, which was subsequently renamed the Four Sword (due to its ability to split its wielder into four separate beings).

Four Swords

Vaati also appeared in Four Swords. In the beginning of the game, Princess Zelda sensed the weakening of the seal and asked Link to accompany her in repairing it. Vaati broke free at this point and kidnapped her with the intention of forcing her to marry him. Link drew the Four Sword and eventually sealed Vaati in it, rescuing Zelda.

Four Swords Adventures

In Four Swords Adventures, Dark Link tricked Link into releasing Vaati. Dark Link ambushed the shrine maidens during their checkup on the Four Sword and sealed them all within crystals, which he took, similar to events in A Link to the Past. It is revealed only at the very end of Four Swords Adventures in a twist ending that Vaati was being used by Ganon. Ganon had used the Dark Mirror to create evil clones of Link to abduct Princess Zelda and the other shrine maidens for him so that he may siphon their power in order to take over the world, as well as destroying the hero's reputation. Before facing Ganon, Link fought and defeated Vaati once more, but rather than merely sealing him in the Four Sword, appeared to finally kill him, but as of right now nothing is confirmed. Trivia

  • In the 210th edition of Nintendo Power, Vaati was listed as number two of the top five Zelda series bosses, only surpassed by Ganon himself.
  • Although Vaati is a wind mage, Vaati's powers in The Minish Cap seem far more earth based, as seen by his ability to turn people to stone.
  • Vaati may have been in Ocarina of Time, but this is hotly disputed as many characters in the series have one eye. Still, the likeness is uncanny.
