JustWatch GmbH is an international database company headquartered in Berlin. The company specializes in the online availability of series and movies and functions as a search engine.[1]

JustWatch is a website, mobile application, and smart TV application that provides information on the availability of films and TV shows on various legal streaming platforms such as: Netflix, HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Apple TV, Disney+, among others.[2]

JustWatch users can find out which digital platforms host a desired movie, series, or documentary. The application provides various filters for searching such as: by genre, type, release date, or popularity. There is also the option to create lists where users can add these contents. As of 2023, the site or app is available in 120 countries and over 35 different languages.[3]

History

JustWatch was founded in 2014 by a group who provided the initial capital from their own funds. They began development on the application in 2014 but was not launched until February 2015.[4] In 2018, the company received funding to improve databases within the European Union.[5]

Founder and Co-founders

The founder of JustWatch, David Croyé, had been the CMO (Chief Marketing Officer) of Bonial before resigning with the aim of creating his own company based on multimedia content.[6]

The Co-founders are Cristoph Hoyer (CMO), Kevin Hiller (Head of Product), Dominik Raute (CTO), Ingke Weimert (CRO), and Michael Wilken (COO). Croyé expressed that all the founders had previously "worked in leading roles at successful international tech-startups" and now "We all felt like we had played for top teams in the German Bundesliga, even playing an instrumental role in winning the season, but we were now ready to advance to the Champions League." [7]
