Raptr is a free social networking website and computer program targeted towards video game players. The company was founded by Dennis Fong, co-founder of Xfire, in 2007 and is located in Mountain View, CA. The company has raised 12 million dollars in funding from investors including Accel Partners and The Founders Fund.
Raptr is similar to other social networking websites. Users can add video games to their profile, as well as track game play time and achievements, share reviews, game related information, and game activity. Raptr lets users publish their gaming accomplishments to sites like Twitter, FriendFeed, and Facebook.
The Raptr client, which is a downloadable Adobe Integrated Runtime application for Mac OS X or Microsoft Windows, supports AIM, Yahoo! Instant Messenger, GTalk, Windows Live Messenger, Xfire, ICQ and Facebook Chat protocols.
Raptr launched in a closed beta on February 2, 2008[2], and launched an open beta to the public on September 3, 2008.[3]
Competitors include Rupture and gamerDNA.[4]
Raptr has partnerships with video game publishers Activision, THQ, Ijji [5] and the Raptr client will be bundled with the PC release of Red Faction: Guerrilla.[6]. Since the Raptr client is not necessary to use the many of the services the website provides, it is a good example of bloatware.
