St Matthew Academy is a co-educational Roman Catholic academy for children aged 3 to 16. It is located in Blackheath, London. The school opened in September 2007 after the closing of St Joseph's Academy, Blackheath, and Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School.[1]

The Academy had a new build budget of £38 million and was designed to be a state-of-the-art teaching centre with a focus on new innovative methods of teaching. It is a registered charity under English law and in 2007–08 it had a gross income of £10,583,164.[2] It is directly funded by the DCSF and receives additional support from its sponsors, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Southwark and the De La Salle Congregation.[citation needed] The Academy is the first Roman Catholic all through Academys from Reception to Year 12 and is a specialist college in Business and Enterprise under the Specialist School's Trust.[citation needed] St Matthew Academy has three Houses: Romero, Teresa and Mandela, named after Archbishop Oscar Romero, Mother Teresa of Calcutta and Nelson Mandela. The Academy since opening has been responsible for a dramatic increase in results at GCSE.[citation needed] In 2010 results rose by 21% making the Academy the most improved school in Lewisham and South London.[citation needed]
