Fighter is the soundtrack album, composed by Vishal-Shekhar to the 2024 Hindi film of the same name, directed by Siddharth Anand that casts Hrithik Roshan, Deepika Padukone and Anil Kapoor in lead roles. The film was produced by under Viacom18 Studios and Marflix Pictures.

Background
Produced by Fox Star Studios, that acquired rights for the Indian adaptation in 2014 after which it underwent series of casting and screenplay changes for four years. Filming commenced under the title "Kizie Aur Manny" by late June 2018. The film was shot across Jamshedpur and Ranchi with sporadic schedules in Mumbai; apart from last one in Paris, France. The original score and soundtrack were composed by A. R. Rahman, with lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya. The cinematography and editing were handled by Setu and Aarif Sheikh, respectively.
Dadlani said that within a week of hearing the script, they had most of the tunes carved, citing the project's 'natural energy' adding to their creative process. In an interview with DNA India Ravijiani said that they kept music of Fighter quite edgy - a combination of electro and dance but keeping the tune as desi and floaty as possible. While writing the track "Sher Khul Gaye", Dadlani said it was a party track where group of pilots were celebrating the milestone achieved. The song brings the feeling like they are 'the kings (metaphorically tigers) of the world'. Anand acknowledged that the notes, scanning and progressions of the song "Sher Khul Gaye" were similar to 1977 single Stayin' Alive, neither inspired nor plagiarized.

In an interview Asian Variety TV Network, after Fighter's narration, they started making music on the spot. Knowing the Roshan would be starring in the film, they subconsciously started to design dance tunes. There were songs that were deep soul (later deciphered as "Mitti" and "Dil Banaane Waaleya"), when they were written - they had kept singer KK in mind. They wanted to record the track with him once finished with compositions. However, four days later, he passed away. In an interview with Sunrise Radio, "Heer Asmani" was written to aid the first glimpse of characters, their relationship with aircraft and skies. "Sher Khul Gaye" was a party song whereas "Ishq Jaisa Kuch" a beach track in pop genre, a first flush of romance between characters played by Roshan and Padukone. In an interview with Asian Sunday, Dadlani said the soundtrack has two distinct types of sound, one, the music of camaraderie of the group of pilots in the air force academy, in the air, initially while training. The rest are based on depth - emotions of patriotism, heartbreak, loss, beauty and courage, truth of the fighter pilots.
The theatrical release of the film suffered due to delays in post-production stages and Covid-19 pandemic. The former reasons and untimely demise of the lead actor called for an OTT release on July 24, 2020 on Disney+ Hotstar. As a homage to him, the film was made accessible sans subscription in India and selective countries of release on the platform. The film received a hysterical response from the audience because the emotional cues of demise for Manny's character in reel turned real into Rajput's life. However, it received mixed reviews from film critics who praised the running time and characterizations but panned the lack of emotional depth, cohesion, casual screenplay and direction.

In an interview with Hindustan Times, Anand cited that the theme of "Heer Aasmani" is an air force pilot expressing their unconditional love for the skies.

Background

Dadlani said that within a week of hearing the script, they had most of the tunes carved, citing the project's 'natural energy' adding to their creative process.[1] In an interview with DNA India Ravijiani said that they kept music of Fighter quite edgy - a combination of electro and dance but keeping the tune as desi and floaty as possible. While writing the track "Sher Khul Gaye", Dadlani said it was a party track where group of pilots were celebrating the milestone achieved. The song brings the feeling like they are 'the kings (metaphorically tigers) of the world'.[2] Anand acknowledged that the notes, scanning and progressions of the song "Sher Khul Gaye" were similar to 1977 single Stayin' Alive, neither inspired nor plagiarized.[3]

They wanted to record the track with him once finished with compositions.[4] However, four days later, he passed away. In an interview with Sunrise Radio, "Heer Asmani" was written to aid the first glimpse of characters, their relationship with aircraft and skies. "Sher Khul Gaye" was a party song whereas "Ishq Jaisa Kuch" a beach track in pop genre,[5] a first flush of romance between characters played by Roshan and Padukone.

In an interview with Hindustan Times, Anand cited that the theme of "Heer Aasmani" is an air force pilot expressing their unconditional love for the skies.[6] He went on to add that it was modern in presentation and features guitar riffs and rustic vocals by singer B Praak. The track was dedication to the special squad of Air Dragons coming together. The song showcases the crew bonding, both during briefing and training sessions as well as during their downtime. [6] The track "Mitti" was a patriotic song that is featured at a point in the movie where the team of fighters suffer a loss that leaves them all scarred.[7]

The track "Spirit of Fighter" was written for the background score of the film and featured in the teaser of the film.[6] The songs "Ishq Jaisa Kuch" and "Dil Chah Raha Hai" were removed from the film footage as they were deemed 'explicit' for Indian audience.[8] However, the former one was added in the end credits[9] of Indian theatrical prints whereas both the tracks were present in the international prints.[8]

Music videos

The song "Sher Khul Gaye" was released as the first single from the film on December 15, 2023.[10] The song was a party number and created the record for reaching 50 million views, within 24 hours on Youtube.[11] It drew comparisons with song "Stayin' Alive" by Bee Gees and "Dynamite" by BTS.[11] Padukone wears a polka dotted black dress and matches to the dance steps by Roshan.[12] Kapoor makes a grand entry, The song was choreographed by Bosco and Caesar.[13] The second single from the soundtrack was "Ishq Jaisa Kuch" was released on December 22, 2023. The song begins with Roshan walking from sea bare-chested with Padukone donning in a black monokini.[14] Later in the song, the leading duo wore beach and party-ready fits, Padukone in a gold and silver embellished mini skirt and bralette-style top by Paco Rabanne[15] The third single was "Heer Aasmani" that was released on January 15, 2024. The crew filmed the song in snowy regions of Jammu and Kashmir. It was visible that the characters were facing difficulty in syncing lip movements under freezing temperatures.[16]

Critical response

American film critic Roger Ebert stated that: A representatively energetic, but unexceptional musical number features lyrics like, “The lions are on the prowl tonight", and the music numbers as pretty romantic.[17] Sakshi Thirani of Common Sense Media said: "The music and dance sequences, such a staple in Bollywood cinema, feel random and irritating instead of entertaining"[18] The Indian Express reviewed the track "Ishq Jaisa Kuch" stating: "The song might grow on the audience but the initial impact left by Deepika and Hrithik is simply unmissable."[19] The Livemint quoted: " Sanchit and Ankit Balhara’s score is as earwormy as their work on Pathaan."[20] Critics at the board of Bollywood Hungama stated that music doesn’t work as intended and is forgettable."[9] They called 'Sher Khul Gaye' as catchy whereas 'Heer Aasmani' and 'Dil Banaane Waaleya' are woven into the narrative. The background score was praised as 'a big-screen cinematic appeal'.[9]

Track listing

The music of the film was released on January 23, 2024.[21] The original soundtrack consists of six songs out of which the first three in that order were released as singles. The two theme tracks were released as "Fighter - Single" on December 1, 2023. Post the film release, track "Mitti" was released as a single with vocals by Suresh Wadkar.
