Hung Vanngo (born 1985) is a Vietnamese Canadian makeup artist based in New York, United States, who has received InStyle Awards's Makeup Artist of the Year^[1] and has worked with Hollywood’s celebrities including Jennifer Aniston, Selena Gomez, Cindy Crawford, Julianne Moore, Renee Zellweger, Jennifer Lawrence.^[2] Vanngo has worked with cosmetics and beauty brands such as Estée Lauder, L’Oréal, Lancôme, and Victoria’s Secret and in 2017 was named as 'global ambassador' for Marc Jacobs Beauty.^[3]^[4]

Early life

Vanngo was born Vietnam, in a family with two other siblings. After the end of Vietnam war, he relocated from Vietnam at age two together with siblings on a refugee boat, as his mother did not have enough funds to travel with them^[1] THe boat capsized after his departure from Vietnam and Vanngo resided in a refugee camp in Thailand for a period of three years until Canada was the first country to accept them as refugees. ^[3]^[5]</ref> Upon leaving the camp, Vanngo and his family immigrated to Canada, settling in Calgary where he pursued his education.

Career

Vanngo's career path started when he landed his first job as a hairdresser. While at the salon, he also began practicing makeup application on clients, which he later remarked as an experience that allowed him to hone his skills and later pursue a career in the makeup industry.^[3]

He moved to New York city in 2006 to build his career and gradually started working with celebrities and larger agencies. In 2015 he was highlighted by New York Magazine as "the next big celebrity makeup artist" ^[6]

Known styles and inspirations

According to Vancouver Sun, Vanngo is well-known for his "smokey-eye look" and in particular his eyes makeup for celebrities such as Selena Gomez, Julianne Moore, Joan Smalls and Jennifer Lopez,^[7] the latter once commented that his makeup made others for several months questioned whether she had done plastic surgery with her eyes.^[3] Vanngo had also previously recommended the use of eyeliner to set the shape of the eyes first, before applying eyeshadow, which is considered as in contrast to a common practice of applying eyeshadow before eyeliner.^[7] Regarding his eyemakeup look, Vanngo remarked that he had 20 to 30 brown pencils to create hundred different versions of smoky eyes, and credited Helena Christensen as one who had early in his career advised him to use brown instead of black color to produce a sexy and warm eye look.^[6]
