New translation

Dear,

Can you translate the page Viktor Đerek ? Thanks. --Intelinsidehp (talk) 19:14, 10 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Translation requires attribution

Information icon Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you translated text from uk:Похід Владислава на Москву into Prince Władysław's March on Moscow. While you are welcome to translate Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When translating a foreign-language Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've translated content, disclosing the translation and linking to the translated page, e.g., Content in this edit is translated from the existing French Wikipedia article at [[:fr:Exact name of French article]]; see its history for attribution. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{translated page}} template on the talk pages of the page you placed the translation. Please provide attribution for this duplication if it has not already been supplied by another editor, and if you have translated material before, even if it was a long time ago, you should provide attribution for that also. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. DanCherek (talk) 03:09, 26 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This is very important; all of the pages you have translated so far did not contain this required attribution. Please keep this in mind going forward. Thanks. DanCherek (talk) 03:20, 26 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@DanCherek: Thank you. Please check talk page and the summary. Did I do right?--Sakateka (talk) 09:33, 26 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, the talk page template looks great! The edit summary is not quite correct. Basically, the attribution should be provided not in the article text itself, but rather in the edit summary. When editing Wikipedia, there is a field labeled "Edit summary" below the main edit box. It looks like this:

Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)

When you translate a new page, you should write something like Content in this edit is translated from uk:Похід Владислава на Москву in that field, kind of like how I did it here. Hope that makes sense! DanCherek (talk) 11:56, 26 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@DanCherek: I added this text to the summary but I was not sure it worked. How could I check that?--Sakateka (talk) 12:01, 26 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If you look at this edit of yours from January, do you see where you wrote "Added links, Correct nationality"? That is where an edit summary usually appears. DanCherek (talk) 12:04, 26 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wow!

Your piece on "Ukrainian Insurgent Army war against Russian occupation" is fantastic! You did a great job! I am thoroughly impressed. BetsyRMadison (talk) 19:13, 26 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I have a couple of questions; trying to give you a hand. The first one is about these liquidated underground groups that were identified through the sale of data.... informers turned these groups in and they were liquified? Not giving you s hard time, trying to help. Also, if you are able it would help immensely if you could translate the date and title of the references. Thanks Elinruby (talk) 00:24, 27 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I see you got the translated template on there. Good job. Elinruby (talk) 00:37, 27 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@BetsyRMadison: @Elinruby: Thank you the support and improvements you have done for the article. I am in Ukraine now and cannot participate in discussion much. I hope the article will stay in Wiki. Also I want to focus your attantion on an important item. The resistance was started in 1941 by Ukrainian People's Revolutionary Army under command of Taras Bulba-Borovets. This army was loyal to democratic Government of the Ukrainian People's Republic in exile. In 1943 Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists became more powerful and arranged their own army. So, the resistance was made by different Ukrainian troops that has different ideology.--Sakateka (talk) 14:16, 29 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Sakateka: I pray everyday for Ukraine. It breaks my heart that you, your family, and your fellow Ukrainian countrymen are being subjected to Putin waging war crimes, genocide, bombing/destroying towns during his illegal invasion of your country. I pray for you & your family to stay safe. Slava Ukraine! Glory to Ukraine! BetsyRMadison (talk) 14:50, 29 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The article Ukrainian Insurgent Army war against Russian occupation has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The article appears to be an (possibly unintended) attempt to glorify the organization partly accountable for the Holocaust. This is extremely disturbing. Please refer to this discussion for more --> [1]

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. GizzyCatBella🍁 21:10, 26 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Sakateka, I read your article several times and I feel you've done a brilliant job with it. I feel the allegation that the article "glorifies the organization partly accountable for the Holocaust" (aka genocide) is unfounded. The history of Ukraine is very complex. Since 1917, with the formation of the Ukrainian People’s Republic, Russia has been waging war to control Ukraine. In 1930s, Russia killed around 4 million Ukrainians in " Holodomor." Then, from 1933-1941, Stalin & Hitler were allies. In 1939, Stalin & Hitler together invaded Poland. Finally in 1941, when Hitler turned on his friend Stalin, and invaded Russian-controlled Ukraine.
Many in western Ukraine saw that invasion as a way to get out from under Russia's grip and to gain an independent state. Ukrainians didn’t want to live under the Germans so much as they wanted to establish an independent state. At that time, Germans had promised Ukrainian nationalists that if they fought along side the Germans, Germany would give them an independent state at the end of the war. So naturally, Ukraine nationalists felt they were more likely to get Ukrainian independence under Nazi occupation than under Soviet occupation. But sadly and sickeningly in the process Ukrainians felt forced to participate in the Holocaust in order to gain independence from Russia.
So the now the questions become: do we say Ukrainian nationalists were “bad guys” because they fought against the Soviets with the German army - or - do we say they were “good guys” because they fought for independence for Ukraine?
And I think you've done a great job in both those regards. I feel you neither glorify, nor demonize the UPAs fight for independence. I feel your piece is neutral, fact based, and you've used great sources.
Finally, I feel that those who allege you're article glorifies the organization partly accountable for the Holocaust should have to tell you specifically what parts of your piece they think does that. Without them giving you specifics, you wouldn't be able to "improve the page to address the issues" they are raising. Let me know if there's anything you need me to do. Sincerely, BetsyRMadison (talk) 23:38, 26 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
| have removed the speedy deletion template as it was clearly applied in error. Someone may still try to delete it though. I apologize that this is your introduction to Wikipedia. These people are clearly important figures and if somebody has an issue with their portrayal (which may arise, as you are translating from a language in which they are national heroes) then the appropriate procedure is not to delete very good work by someone else. I am trying to improve some idiom issues. Please keep an eye on this page as I may have other questions Elinruby (talk) 00:34, 27 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

how about you finish up one of your drafts? Suggestion

Surely there is punctuayion to fix or some thing. Let me know if you have questions. Elinruby (talk) 16:13, 29 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Elinruby: I don't get your question. What do you mean? The first one is about these liquidated underground groups that were identified through the sale of data.... informers turned these groups in and they were liquified?--Sakateka (talk) 09:23, 30 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Sakateka: that was my question. I think it was in the lede or in the Background section. I changed it to say that informers turned these groups in and they were liquified. Is that right? Also, what's a hut? I have been changing this to "unit" but if there is a better more specific meaning let me know. From the context, I am assuming it's something like a hundred?Elinruby (talk) 23:59, 30 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The person who placed an AFD Deletion on your piece, has unilaterally "restricted" you from commenting.

@Sakateka: Even though you have 19,261 edits globally, the person, "GizzyCatBella" who put an AFD Deletion request on your piece has unilaterally restricted/banned you from commenting on that page and has put a "strike" through on all of your comments. GizzyCat alleges that you don't meet "extended confirmed requirements" of "500 edits." (see the requirements here [2]). Even though you have 19,261 edits globally, you only have 473 edits on commons wikimedia. So to quickly reinstate your right to speak:
1) You can request to have your EC user right expedited at [3] (Be sure and clear to include you have 19,261 edits globally in your request.) Also, you may want to include the number of articles you've published.
or
2) quickly make 27 more edits somewhere, to meet that 500 edit threshold.

@BetsyRMadison: Thank you for the info. How could I check numbers of my edits?--Sakateka (talk) 19:59, 30 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Sakateka: I'll give you two links to check your stats
1) Here's a link to your "global contributions" [4]
  • Global edit count = 19,301 edits
  • Projects = 7
2) On this next link, be sure to look on the 2nd row, on the right hand side, and you'll see your "global edits" included. [5]
Global edit counts (approximate)
  • 16,993 edits = UK.wikipedia
  • 1,474 edits = wikidata
  • 464 edits = Commons wikimedia
  • 339 edits = wikipedia
  • 10 edits = RU wikipedia.org
  • 6 edits = JA wikipedia
  • 5 edits = PT wikipedia.org
*19,291 edits = All projects BetsyRMadison (talk) 20:25, 30 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. In that 2nd link I gave you, you'll see the first stats that show up are "Basic stats." Those "Basic Stats" are the only stats GizzyCat used to allege you don't meet the requirements. If GizzyCat had bothered to look further, they'd have seen you've made 19,291 total edits. Although, I don't know if that would have made any difference in their unilateral decision to restrict and ban you from commenting and striking through all your comments. That's why I recommend the 2 things I did in my 1st post to you under this topic. It's best for you to meet those requirements either by requesting your EC right be expedited, or by quickly making 27 more edits to see if they show up. If it were me, I'd do both because it looks like the 'edit count' is not done in real time (there seem to be a big lag time) BetsyRMadison (talk) 20:35, 30 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I could not find this 473 edits, you wrote about. How do you calculate them? It is only 339 edits in statistic of wikipedia, isn't it? Sakateka (talk) 20:41, 30 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Sakateka: right, it is en.wikipedia that counts, or at least that is the contention. I haven't had to deal with this before, so I am not sure whether that is exactly right. So my suggestion to you is that you work on one of your drafts, or better yet, go to WP:PNT and pick an article about something other than World War 2 (because you are running into restrictions on articles about the Holocaust). I am confident that there are at least 150 copy edits that need to be made in those articles, and it would help Wikipedia because mostly they are on that list because of bad machine translation, which is easier to decipher if you speak the original language. I say this is probably better because I am not sure, come to think of it. whether edits in draft space would count. Elinruby (talk) 21:41, 30 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Info-box suggestion for your article

Since there are so many acronyms, I feel it will benefit the reader if an info-box listing all the acronyms would make it easy for the reader.
Here's an example list: (it's not complete but a start)

  • OUN-B: Bandera faction (from October 1942): collaborted with Germans to fight Soviets & Poles
  • OUN-R: Radicals (also Bandera) faction
  • OUN-M: Melnyk faction (in spring 1943):
  • Unified UPA
  • UPA Polissya Sich

Let me know your thoughts on that. BetsyRMadison (talk) 22:23, 3 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@BetsyRMadison: Thank you for interest to this article. The explanation of difference between parties is not a topic of this article. So, links to the main articles (UPA Polissya Sich, OUN-B, OUN-M) would be enough for further reading. Also it is not right to make evaluative judgments about collaboration because main leaders of OUN-B were in Nazi prison during the occupation and readers have to make their own decision on this topic after reading the main article. Also, I want to notice that OUN-R and OUN-B is the same organization. Official name was OUN-R, but many historians call it by the name of its leader Bandera - OUN-B. I hope this help.--Sakateka (talk) 10:37, 4 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The memoirs of Taras Bulba really does highlight the 'will' to regain independence. Very impressive, they accomplished a lot, especially when you consider they were an "army without a country." I thought OUN-R was the official name & had a feeling "-B" was a way for historians & students to differentiate between the OUN territory leaders. Ukraine (and much of the world) has a very complex history with regard to establishing and maintaining independence from foreign rule/domination. Stay safe! Slava Ukraine! Hey Sakateka not only *can* you comment on the talk page and edit the article, you must Elinruby (talk) 08:16, 7 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the support! Sakateka (talk) 08:55, 7 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You are welcome but you absolutely have to become involved in the article, as it is being gutted. The thing about your number of edits only applied to the AfD. In particular you should comment on people adding in the collaboration with the Nazis Elinruby (talk) 11:16, 7 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

just to amplify on this—I went pretty far out on a limb for this article, and I do agree that it needs work. Start with the references, which I still have not completely deciphered. I found a note that had apparently been cut and pasted from Czech. We are dealing with people who haven’t yet processed that it is ok to use sources that aren’t in English, so it is important that the sources’ dates and publishers be in English, and highly preferred that you use cite format with a trans-title parameter. Your Russian archives reference got deleted because you weren’t following the discussion to tell us what the abbreviations meant, and no doubt the text it was referencing is gone by now. I have defended starting in 1944 with the re-invasion by the Soviets, but because of your lack of participation I was guessing, and people were accusing you of trying to cover up the collaboration with the Germans. The people who tried to delete it are still chipping away at the article, removing all mentions of wrong-doing by the Soviets. It is extremely important that you do not feel complacent about this article. Elinruby (talk) 19:03, 7 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I understand that I have responsibility for this article. But it is hard to fight with editors who are convinced with Russian propaganda. I will spare time to keep my eye on this article. Thank you very much for your input in this. Sakateka (talk) 08:00, 8 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I do understand that, believe me. However, there is currently a discussion about the scope of the article that could really use your input, and it would really help if you could get yourself past 500 edits on the English wikipedia Elinruby (talk) 09:32, 8 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Introduction to contentious topics

You have recently edited a page related to Eastern Europe or the Balkans, a topic designated as contentious. This standard message is designed as an introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially-designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

  • adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
  • comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
  • follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
  • comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
  • refrain from gaming the system.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.
