Focus

The editathon will focus on "American Artists of the World's Columbian Exposition"

With approximately 1200 American artists participating in the 1893 Fair in Chicago, it was the largest exhibition of American art ever assembled at the time. Many artists are well-known today—Thomas Eakins, Winslow Homer, Mary Cassatt, John Singer Sargent—but many do not have such recognizable names, much less quality Wikipedia articles. Please join us to mine library books, journals, curatorial files, Art & Artist Files, and all the online resources the Smithsonian Libraries can provide, to expand and improve information on great American artists at the Fair!

FAQ

Do I have to register to attend, or can I just arrive on the day?

Advance RSVP is required for non-Smithsonian staff. Due to the limited number of spaces and the advance security badge requirements, the only way to guarantee admission is to sign up. Space is limited to 20 non-staff Wikipedian participants.

Do I have to be a member of Wikimedia DC?

No, this event is open to everyone.

What should I bring?

  • Photo ID
  • Laptop

Add your own questions here

Do I have to be an expert on the subject matter of the editathon?

Absolutely not! There will be tons of resources and librarians to work with.

Will there be a barnstar?

Reason 1 for "happy" in "happy hour" post editathon: barnstar!! * Yahoo! * wild cheering and applause *

Note: Since this event takes place in a secure, behind-the-scenes portion of the Smithsonian, real names of attendees are required in order to grant them security badges. Photo ID will be required for admission. If you don't want to reveal your name on the wiki, please email it to one of the organizers (listed above) so that they will be able to make the connection to (but not publish) your username.
