The 2012–13 North Carolina Tar Heels men's basketball team represented the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the 2012–13 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The team's head coach was Roy Williams, who is in his 10th season as UNC's head men's basketball coach. They played their home games at the Dean E. Smith Center and were members of the Atlantic Coast Conference. They finished the season 25–11, 12–6 in ACC play to finish in third place. They advanced to the championship game of the ACC Tournament where they lost to Miami (FL). They received an at-large bid to the 2013 NCAA Tournament where they defeated Villanova in the second round before, in the third round, having their season ended for the second consecutive year by Kansas.

The top-rated recruit in the class scheduled to start college in Fall 2013 is Isaiah Hicks, the eighth ranked power forward and the 18th ranked player in the ESPN 100.[4] Shortly behind him in that ranking is Kennedy Meeks at #20. He is the top-ranked center in the 2013 high school class. Britt is the 52nd ranked player in the current high school class and 11th point guard. He tore his meniscus in December 2012.[5]

Joel Berry is a junior in high school who season-to-date is averaging 27.8 points, 7.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 3.7 steals. He is the first sophomore in state history to be named Florida Mr. Basketball.[8] The last college basketball player at North Carolina that won that award was Vince Carter.[9] Based on Berry's commit date and current year in high school, he will start school at North Carolina in Fall 2015, two years from now. He is the 12th ranked prospect for that class and the third-ranked point guard according to ESPN.[10] Coach Williams watched Berry play a high school game on 9 February 2013.[11]
