2017 Southland tournament winner

The 2016–17 Incarnate Word Cardinals men's basketball team will represent the University of the Incarnate Word during the 2016–17 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Cardinals will be led by eleventh year head coach Ken Burmeister and will play their home games at McDermott Convocation Center. They are members of the Southland Conference.

The 2016–17 season will be the final year of a four-year transitional period for Incarnate Word from Division II to Division I.[1] During year four, the Cardinals will play a normal conference schedule. They will be Division I for scheduling purposes and will also be considered as a Division I RPI member. Although Incarnate Word will not be classified as a Division I school for scheduling purposes until the conclusion of year four, the university can win the regular season conference title, but cannot participate in the conference tournament until the 2017–18 season at which time they will also be able to enter the NCAA Tournament.
