Template:Campaignbox 2019 Iran Crisis On 29 July 2021, an oil tanker was attacked near the coast of Oman while sailing to the United Arab Emirates from Tanzania. The Mercer Street, flagged in Liberia and operated by a company based in Israel, was attacked, allegedly with suicide drones, sustaining damage to its bridge, killing its Romanian national captain and a British national bodyguard. U.S. Navy vessels responded and escorted the ship to a safe location. The attack was preceded by two similar incidents that occurred in May and June 2019. According to senior U.S. and Israeli officials, the attack was conducted by Iran.[1][2]

Despite no immediate official reaction from the Iranian government to the Israeli accusations that it was responsible for the attack, the Iranian government's Arabic-speaking Al-Alam News Network cited unnamed "knowledgeable sources" who said the tanker was attacked as a response for the "latest Israeli airstrikes on Dabaa airport in Syria," which the Network said resulted in 2 unspecified casualties.[3][4]
