List of episodes

Season two premiered in the U.S. on September 8, 2009 and picks up at the end of summer after the events of last season's dramatic prom party. The first episode managed 2.6 million viewers becoming the highest episode ratings of the show since January 2009.[1]

Plot

The second season focuses on the West Beverly Hills High group as they begin their junior year and go through dramatic changes and surprises that will change their lives. Annie must deal with the consequences of the hit and run when she finds out the man's nephew goes to West Bev. Meanwhile, Naomi's sister, Jen continues to manipulate and use her for whatever she can; Dixon finds a new girlfriend; Silver and Kelly must come to terms with devastating news; Adrianna begins a journey of independent and personal growth; Annie begins to date the nephew of the man she thought she killed which leads to explosive consequences in the finale.

Cast

Head writer/producer Rebecca Sinclair said that second season will rely much less on original characters Jennie Garth, Tori Spelling and Shannen Doherty to boost ratings.[2] She also elaborated:

"If Gossip Girl is about youth in New York, I want to [make 90210] about youth in L.A. and Beverly Hills."

This season promotes Matt Lanter as Liam Court from a recurring character from the 16th episode to a regular character, while Dustin Milligan (Ethan Ward) has been released from his contract due to the producers feeling his character had reached its conclusion.[2]

Major recurring roles this season include Jen Clark (Sara Foster), Naomi's older sister, who was introduced in episode 21 of the first season; Teddy Montgomery (Trevor Donovan), a charming, tennis prodigy and movie star son who is also Adrianna's first boyfriend;[3] and Bitsy Liberman (former Law & Order actress Elisabeth Rohm) has signed on for atleast one episode, as a socialite that locks horns with Naomi.[4] Rumer Willis will also guest star for several episodes as Gia, a "punky, cute lesbian who isn't afraid to speak her mind."[5] On July 20, 2009, E! Online reported that actor John Schneider had been cast as Liam's plastic surgeon stepfather.[6]

Jennie Garth and Ann Gillespie returned in Season 2 for multiple episodes. Garth's character came back to offer some advice to Annie's parents about the accident situation while Anne Gillespie signed on to reprise her role as Jackie Taylor for several episodes starting in October 2009 for the character to mend her relationship with her daughters before she died.[7]

Although ratings have decreased since the show returned after it's hiatus it is the #1 most successful on DVR in the 18-49 percentage demographic with about 1.07 million people in the U.S. recording and watching the show within 7 days, possibly due to the show overlapping with American Idol.[8] DVR ratings for the show average more than double it's broadcast ratings.[9] During the shows second hiatus for two weeks in April The CW repeated episode 13 "Rats and Heroes" which averaged just under 1 million viewers.[10]
