Slovakia entered the Eurovision Song Contest 1996 in Oslo, after being relegated from the 1995 contest.
Slovenská Televízia (STV) selected Marcel Palonder to sing "Kým nás máš" (As Long As You Have Us) in Oslo, marking their second entry in the contest. The song was composed by Juraj Burian and Jozef Urban.
At Eurovision
In 1996, for the only time in Eurovision history, an audio-only pre-qualifying round of the 29 songs entered (excluding hosts Norway who were exempt) was held in March in order for the seven lowest-scoring songs to be eliminated before the final. Slovakia placed 17th with 38 points, thus qualifying for the final.
Palonder performed 22nd on the night of the contest, following Bosnia and Herzegovina and preceding Sweden. At the close of the voting it had received 19 points, placing 18th in a field of 23. As of 2020, this remains the best result Slovakia has ever achieved at the Eurovision Song Contest. Unfortunately, the result was not good enough to prevent Slovakia from being relegated from the 1997 contest on the cumulative countback rule.
The Slovak jury awarded its 12 points to Malta.
