Marvan Atapattu is a retired cricketer who represented the Sri Lanka national cricket team from 1990 to 2007. He was also the captain of the team from 2003 to 2006. An opening batsman, Atapattu has scored centuries (100 or more runs in a single innings) on sixteen occasions in Test cricket and on eleven occasions in One Day International (ODI) matches.[1] Upon his retirement, Atapattu had played 90 Test matches, 268 ODIs and 2 Twenty20 Internationals (T20I), scoring 5,502, 8,529 and 5 runs respectively.[1]

Atapattu made his Test debut against India at the age of 20, but failed to score.[2] Seven years later, in 1997, and against the same opponent, Atapattu scored his first Test century, an innings of 108 runs at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali.[2] His highest Test score of 249 came against Zimbabwe in 2004 at Bulawayo.[2] His score of 127 in 2005 against New Zealand was his last Test century.[2] As of August 2015, Atapattu is sixth in the list of most double hundreds scored in Test matches.[3]

Atapattu made his ODI debut against India scoring 8 not out.[4] His first ODI century came in 1997 when he scored 153 in 2-run victory against India at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.[4] At Lord's in 1998, Atapattu scored 132 not out against England, his highest score in this format of the game.[4] He also scored two centuries in the 2003 Cricket World Cup: against Zimbabwe he scored 103 not out and against South Africa, only the 19th tied ODI in cricket history, he made 124. He was selected as man of the match on both occasions.[5] His innings of 111 against Pakistan in 2004 was his last ODI century.[4] Atapattu played in two T20Is, registering a highest score of 5.[1]
