Girija Oak is an Indian actress, known for her performances in Taare Zameen Par and Shor in the City.[1]

Career

Oak made her debut on the big screen at the age of 15. She has worked in Marathi movies like Goshta Choti Dongraevadhi, Gulmohar, Manini and Adgule Madgule.[2][3]

Her first Marathi television show as lead actress was Zee Marathi's Lajja with Piyush Ranade, Tejaswini Pandit and Mukta Barve. She portrayed a scandal victim Manaswini Desai (Manu) who was supported by a young and dynamic CID Inspector Aakash Ketkar (played by Piyush Ranade). The show was huge hit and her work was very well praised. She also played lead role in don special Marathi play with versatile actor like Jitendra Joshi. Each and every aspect of the play was appreciated by the audience, including the sound and light effect.

In 2018, Oak made her short film debut with the film Quarter directed by Navjyot Bandiwadekar.[4] The film was premiered at 71st Cannes film Festival Court Métrage- Short Film Corner and was later showcased at more than 12 different International Film festivals, winning numerous accolades. For her performance in the film, Oak won her first international award as the Best actress at European Cinematography Awards 2018[5] and a nomination as the Best International Actress at Maverick Movie Awards 2018.[6] The trailer and the poster of the film Quarter was launched in a grand event in the presence of the Indian press and prominent film industry personalities.[7] Quarter was the first short film in India to launch a poster and trailer in such a grand level, something which is only done for the feature films in the Indian Film industry.[8] The film was digitally released worldwide on 10 April 2020.

2018–2019, Oak played the lead role in the second season of Hindi serial Ladies Special aired on Sony Entertainment Television.[9]

Personal life

Oak is the daughter of Marathi actor Girish Oak. She completed her degree in biotechnology from Thakur College of Science and Commerce Kandivali East, Mumbai.[10] She joined a theater workshop and started acting in advertisements.[11]

Oak is married to Suhrud Godbole.[12] She is the daughter-in-law of Marathi film actor, dialog writer and film producer Shrirang Godbole.
