Location of Veliny in the Czech Republic

Veliny is a village in the Pardubice Region of the Czech Republic, 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) east from the town of Holice. It has about 360 inhabitants.

History

The place is first mentioned in a written document from 1366.

Wooden church of Saint Nicholas existed already in the 14th century, its current baroque style is from year 1752 (repaired in 1903). The building is now historical landmark, protected by the state. Lying on the edge of two religions the village had both Catholic and Protestant graveyards.

The most famous person born here is Ivo Zvára [1] nuclear physicist at Czech Academy of Sciences, who participated in the discovery of new superheavy elements.
