5HP is ZF Friedrichshafen AG's trademark name for its five-speed automatic transmission models (5-speed transmission with Hydraulic converter and Planetary gearsets) for longitudinal engine applications, designed and built by ZF's subsidiary in Saarbrücken.
Specifications
Final Conventionally Designed Gearbox
The 5HP is the last transmission-family conventionally designed. To meet the requirements for more ratios, only the way with additional components could be chosen. That made the gearboxes bigger, heavier and even more expensive. Up to 10 main components (gear sets, Ravigneaux considered as 2, brakes, clutches) showed, that this marked the end of conventional design. The successing 6HP-family, using the all new Lepelletier gear mechanism design, needing only 8 main components to achieve 6 gear ratios, showed the upcoming new paradigm.
