Burnout Championship Drag Racing is a video game developed and published by Bethesda Softworks for DOS, released on March 20, 1998.[1][2]
Gameplay
Burnout Championship Drag Racing is a drag racing simulation.
It features both heads up eliminator and bracket racing.
The game uses Bethesda's XnGine[3] and features an adaptation Motion Software's PC-Dyno, which allows for very accurate simulated engine building and testing.
The game supported online multiplayer via IPX on LAN, Dial Up Modem, and Internet over Mplayer and Kali. During the games peak, there was a large and very active organization called the Simulated Hot Rod Association (SHRA) that mimicked NHRA and ran competitive events much like real world drag racing.
The game did not simulate forced induction engine designs, but the PCE Player's Choice Edition did feature Nitros Oxide injection.
Depending on class of car being raced, the individual races may last only as little as 6 seconds, much of the game was spent in the building and testing of the cars to be raced in competition with either AI racers or online against other humans.
Reception
Next Generation reviewed the PC version of the game, rating it four stars out of five, and stated that "The 40 seconds spend ripping towards the finish line is worth the five or 10 minutes spent setting up the car. The bragging rights are prize enough."[4] Stephen Poole from GameSpot said that "Burnout has such a refreshing feel and intense bursts of white-knuckled action that it's really worth sticking it out for a while."[5]
