Tyne Dock Metro station

Tyne Dock is a station on the Tyne and Wear Metro, serving Tyne Dock in South Tyneside. The station joined the network in March 1984, following the opening of the line between Heworth and South Shields.
The original Tyne Dock station opened in June 1839, on the Brandling Junction Railway. It was sited to the east of the divergence of the Brandling Junction Railway route via High Shields, and the Stanhope and Tyne Railway route via Chichester. The Tyne and Wear Metro station at Tyne Dock is built to the east of the divergence, but on the former Stanhope and Tyne Railway route.
The route via High Shields was closed in June 1981, with the Tyne and Wear Metro line to South Shields following the former route of the Stanhope and Tyne Railway.
The station was refurbished in 2018, at a cost of £350,000. The refurbishment project involved the installation of white vitreous enamel panels, new seating and lighting, and improved security and accessibility, as well as resurfaced platforms. The station was also pained in to the new black and white corporate colour scheme.[1]
Tyne Dock is located about 3⁄4 mile (1.2 km) to the north west of South Tyneside District Hospital.
The station was used by 299,039 passengers in 2017–18, making it the third-least-used station on the South Shields branch, after Bede (133,215) and Simonside (169,688).
Facilities
Step-free access is available at all stations across the Tyne and Wear Metro network, with ramps providing step-free access to both platforms at Tyne Dock. The station is equipped with ticket machines, waiting shelter, seating, next train information displays, timetable posters, and an emergency help point on both platforms. Ticket machines are able to accept payment with credit and debit card (including contactless payment), notes and coins.[2][3] The station is also fitted with smartcard validators, which feature at all stations across the network.[4][5]
There is a free car park available at the station, with 34 spaces. There is also the provision for cycle parking, with 2 cycle pods available for use.[6]
Service and frequency
Tyne Dock is served by the Yellow Line , which operates between South Shields and St. James with an end-to-end journey time of 83 minutes.
Services from platform 1 operate towards South Shields via Whitley Bay, with the first train departing at 05:33 (05:40 on Saturday and 06:55 on Sunday). Services from platform 2 operate towards St. James, with the first train departing at 05:48 (05:52 on Saturday and 07:07 on Sunday). Trains run frequently across the network, at intervals of up to every 12 minutes (Monday to Saturday daytime), and every 15 minutes (evening and Sunday), with the last trains departing at around midnight.[6]
