Early life and education
(1993 - 2001)
Shaw was born in Richmond, British Columbia and raised in Coquitlam, British Columbia.[2] He is of half-Chinese and part Polish and Ukrainian descent; his father was an immigrant from Hong Kong.[3] Tyler has an older brother, Matthew Ip Shaw, who is a professional actor[4] and 3 younger half siblings; two younger brothers and a younger sister. Tyler’s passion for much of his life, in addition to music, has been soccer as he played competitively for many years.[5]
At age 19, Tyler attended UPEI on a soccer scholarship where he played as a goaltender. During his first year as a sociology student at University of Prince Edward Island, he was encouraged by his friend / roommate to make a cover and take part in the "Coca-Cola MuchMusic Covers Contest 2012" and was one of 13,000 who applied. His original audition video, was a cover of Hedley's "Invincible" put him in Top 15 of the contestant finalists. With a cover of Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" he proceeded to Top 10 and through his interpretation of Britney Spears' "I Wanna Go" to Top 3. The results were announced during the 2012 MuchMusic Video Awards on June 17, and Shaw was crowned the winner.[6]
Shortly after winning the Coca-Cola covers contest, Tyler relocated from Prince Edward Island to Toronto, where he now calls home.
Musical Career
(2012 - 2017: Career Beginnings + Yesterday)
Tyler's debut single, "Kiss Goodnight", was co-written by Shaw with Stephen Kozmeniuk and Todd Clark, and was produced by 'Koz' and Zubin Thakkar. The single quickly climbed the Canadian radio charts and soon after became Tyler’s first gold certified single and peaked at #24 on the Canadian Billboard Hot 100 charts. The follow up, "By My Side" was released as Shaw's second official single in June 2013. After 2 successful singles with Sony Music Canada, Tyler signed a full album deal with the record label in 2014. He released the fan favorite "It Happens All the Time" in 2014 and the hit single "House of Cards" in 2015. Tyler released his debut studio album, Yesterday , on September 4, 2015 to critical acclaim. While the album landed just ahead of the digital streaming era, Tyler’s single performed exceptionally well at Canadian radio. In January 2016, Tyler released his sixth radio single ‘Wicked’ which shot up the Canadian radio charts and soon became a certified gold single.[7]
To support his debut album, Tyler toured across Canada with Selena Gomez for her ‘Revival World Tour’ in Spring 2016.[8] He also performed as a supporting act for Canadian breakout artists including Shawn Mendes and Alessia Cara within the album cycle.[9][10] Tyler has performed for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex at the Invictus Games in May 2017.[11] In August of 2017, Tyler began officially working on this sophomore album, INTUITION.
(2018 - 2020: The INTUITION Era)
In December of 2017, Tyler released a Christmas single ‘Silent Night’ ahead of the holiday season which was serviced to Canada radio. He performed the Christmas favorite on national television for CTV’s The Original Santa Claus Parade in November of 2018, along with The Candian Tenors and Johnny Orlando. The first official single from Tyler’s sophomore project was ‘Cautious’ which was released in January of 2018. The single reached top 10 at Canadian radio and is officially certified gold.
The sophomore album INTUITION was released September 28, 2018 via Sony Music Canada. The single is certified double platinum and broke the top 5 on the Canadian radio charts and reaching #34 on Canadian Billboard Hot 100 chart. The single reached #1 twice on the French BDS charts with the french duet version featuring french singer Sara Diamond. Tyler’s album INTUITION received a Juno Awards nomination for ‘Pop Album of the Year’ in January 2019 and landed him a performance slot of the national broadcast of the Canadian awards show in March 2019 where he performed an acoustic rendition of ‘With You’.[14] The official music video for ‘With You’ has reached 30 million video views on YouTube and helped garner over 100k subscribers for Tyler’s channel, earning him a YouTube subscriber award in March 2019.
The third and final single from the album, ‘To The Man Who Let Her Go’, was released in May 2019 and reached top 10 across 3 Canadian radio formats. The single is officially certified gold and the official music video, shot by The Young Astronauts, reached #1 on iTunes Canada music video charts. Tyler ended 2019 on a high note, following his national tour run with ‘The Wanted Tour. According to BDS / Nielsen Soundscan, Tyler’s single ‘With You’ was the most played single at Canadian radio by a Canadian artist.
