Matthew Robert Smith (born 22 November 1999) is a professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Manchester City and the Wales national football team.[3]

Professional career

Born in Redditch, Smith was a youth product of West Brom before moving to the youth academy of Manchester City at the age of 14.[4] On 3 July 2018, he moved on loan to FC Twente for the 2018–19 season.[5] On 1 July 2019, Smith joined Queens Park Rangers on a season-long loan. [6] After the loan was cut short early, he signed for Charlton Athletic on 31 January 2020 on loan until the end of the 2019–2020 season.[7]

International career

Smith has played for Wales at under-17, under-19, under-21 and senior level, often captaining the side at youth level. He received a call-up to the senior Wales national football team on 20 May 2018.[8]

Smith qualifies for the Welsh team as his grandfather is from Gwent (county), South Wales.[9] He made his debut for Wales in a friendly 0–0 tie with Mexico, replacing Tom Lawrence after 81 minutes.[10]
