This was Wimbledon's second national play-off final win in five years. They had won the Conference National (now National League) play-off final in 2011 over Luton, but the match had to be played at the City of Manchester Stadium due to the 2011 UEFA Champions League Final taking place at Wembley.
The scorer of Wimbledon's second goal, Adebayo Akinfenwa revealed shortly after the end of the game that he had been released by the club and that he was looking for a new club.[4]
