Biswas (pronounced in Bengali as "bish-shash") is a surname commonly used by the Bengali community. The surname was an honorary title bestowed on persons who were relied upon for the work of accounts, receipts and expenditure.[1][2] Among Bengali Hindus, the surname is associated mainly with Kayasthas[3][4] and some of whom may belong to the Scheduled Caste categorisation as well[5] and also among some Muslim and Christian Bengalis.[6]

In Bengali, Biswas means faith or trust.[7] This title would have been attributed to those who contributed for the government administrative services in Bengal.[8]
