Parents

Felipe Juan Froilán de Todos los Santos de Marichalar y Borbón (born 17 July 1998 in Madrid) is the elder child and only son of Infanta Elena, Duchess of Lugo, and Don Jaime de Marichalar. He is fourth in the line of succession to the Spanish Throne, after his mother. He is frequently referred to in popular media by his third given name Froilán to distinguish him from his uncle, King Felipe VI.

Early life

Felipe de Marichalar y Borbón was born in 17 July 1998 at Ruber International Hospital in Madrid.[2] His name Juan is after his maternal great-grandfather, Juan, Count of Barcelona; Froilán after the patron saint of Lugo (his mother is the Duchess of Lugo); and Todos los Santos (All Saints) as it is customary among the Bourbons.[citation needed] His godparents were his maternal grandfather, Juan Carlos of Spain, and his paternal grandmother, Doña Concepción Sáez de Tejada y Fernández de Boadilla, Lady of the Manor of Tejada (1929–2014).[3]

Controversies

On 9 April 2012, Felipe accidentally shot himself in his right foot while he was on a farm of his father's family in Garray (Soria).[4] His father had to declare to the Civil Guard because Spanish law forbade the use of firearms by minors under the age of 14.[5] The judge dismissed the case against Don Jaime de Marichalar, considering it not gross negligence but a small misdemeanor.[5]

Title

Since birth, he has carried the style "His Excellency". All the children of Infanta Cristina and Infanta Elena have the H.E. Don/Doña style, as befits the children of an Infanta of Spain.[6] Although they do not have a title, all grandchildren of King Juan Carlos are members of the Spanish Royal House.
